I'll answer your question with another question... what's the difference between games like Nintendo Land or NSMB U and your average smartphone game?

The smartphone games cost $59 less.

The huge gap in quality?

Do you see that?  "The smartphone games cost $59 less."  Why do you think he says that?  MAYBE because Mario, as much of a gaming landmark as he is, is for one specific audience.  Mario 2D to Mario 3D, to a lot of us, is still Mario.  They've GOT that crowd...HELL, they've had that crowd and never lost them for over 2 decades.  Don't you think it's about time to add other weapons under your belt as well, Nintendo?

Kid Icarus: Uprising & Dillon's Rolling Western & Youkai Watch & Denpa Men & Sumo-Puzzle (Pushmo & etc.) & Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon  & The Wonderful 101 (2nd Party) & Bayonetta 2 and up (2nd Party) & Lego City Undercover (2nd Party) & Sakura Samurai & Ketzal's Corridors & Wii Sports & Wii Party & Rodea the Sky Soldier (3rd Party) & King of Pirates (3rd Party) & ZombiU (3rd Party) & good Resident Evil games (3rd Party) & Monster Hunter 3 and up (3rd Party) & etc.

Okay...lol.  First I'd like to say that I'm rooting for Ninty, absolutely.  With that being said, look at the games you mentioned, which are a lot.  Where are the fake wrestlers?  Where are the silly-but-unique third-person shooters?  Where are the games that are a direct troll of the popular games on PS4/Xbox One, but with Ninty's quirky-but-humorous graphics style?  I hear all the time how Ninty fans wish games were ported over to the WiiU.  I say, make your OWN mark with those genres.

Unless of course, Nintendo (and their loyal fans) don't want to EXPAND into other popular genres of gaming.  Which would bring us back to marketing to mobile gaming and poor console sales, again...

Nintendo has plenty of hope things will get better, all the money is in software sales and Nintendo has heavy duty software coming this year.   What software does Sony have coming that will make them any money at all.  Infamous Second Son?   The first 2 sold an average of 2 million each and that was with one of them being a pack in game.   Driveclub?  Hell NO.  GT6 has barely cracked 2 million.  Forza 5 just hit 1 million this week.  Driveclub is going to be a mega fail just because it is a racing game.   Sony has nothing else announced for PS4 this year (yet).

Sony makes most money from 3rd party licensing.  Unusual idea for Nintendo I'm sure.

Are you talking about Bayonetta 2 & Shin Megami Tensei & Lego City Undercover & The Wonderful 101 & Monster Hunter & etc. etc.

I've bolder some of the games that you are talking about, which addresses what you said. And there are more then what I have mentioned. I look forward to Zone of the Enders 3 (3DS exclusive).

Well I was half kidding, but 3rd party is fairly small on Nintendo's earnings reports compared to their own products.

The point is for Sony it's less about 1st party sales than overall sales.  Expect 4 titles sold for every PS4 this year, so maybe 60 million titles?

My 8th gen collection

i dont know why people keep insisting...
Cnady crush is the best selling and most profitable mobile game to date, BY FAR, and it roughly made the same money MKWii has made for Nintendo
i dont see the deal

I haven't played any mobile game that's like Nintendo Land or NSMBU.

OT: Many people don't see the value in console games (even more so of Handheld games), especially that of Nintendo. Even if they do produce large games (like Zelda or 3D Marios and yes, 2D Platformers.) This mainly applies to Nintendo only. There will come a time when mobile games do start to really rival console games, but that time is not now.

The time will be at the point smartphone games cost 30€/$ or more. Only starting at this point these games can have budgets that allow for games comparable to console-games (sans the shovelware).

@Kaizer: Well, I don't think I was clear in my point. Whatever, at the end of the day it's Nintendo's Tree, and they're sitting in it...

EDIT:  Wait...ZOE3 is a 3DS exclusive?  :-/

I don't understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea. I know Wii U is failing miserably and the 3DS has already peaked, but in 29 years, they only have 2 yearly losses. Plus, It's very hard to make a casual title a huge hit. They've proved they could do it with the "Wii" series, but the hugest hits on smartphones, like the Angry Birds games, Flappy Bird, Temple Run, etc., all appeal to casual audiences. It's easier to create hits on consoles because they can do almost any genre they want. You have Shooters, Fighters, Platformers, Action games, Adventure games, Racing games, Casual games, Open-World games, etc. being 10 million+ sellers.

Shorter Version

It makes no sense.

I'm on the side of the argument for doing mobile games.

Reasons:

  • Core business is in major contraction.  Wii U hasn't got traction and is set to do 20% of Wii sales.  3DS is set to do 50% of DS sales.  That is a major contraction, and the future is uncertain.
  • Companies like King have revenues near $2 billion from simple games like Candy Crush on Smartphone.
  • Nintendo, with it's strong IP and design sense can monetize with some new games designed for Smartphone.
  • Advertise Nintendo products inside their Smartphone games.  Unify with NNID.  Bring people in the door to core platforms.
That doesn't mean abandoning core business, but adding new business, leveraging their IP.

That exactly is what Nintendo plans. In their presentation where they also talked about QoL, they also said they have a team of devs for smartphone now, that can fdo every sort of app and should advertise Nintendo franchises.

But they can make so much money from it and everyone knows Nintendo's characters. I don't see the problem with releasing one or two small mobile games. It won't hurt the sales of the 3DS.

Math.
Nintendo needs money
Its best assets are their Software.
Software sells best on mobile.
The End.

Software costs the least on mobile.

App-makers have to pay significant  ampounts to get into the shop.

Pure smartphone devs have a lot less revenue than devs for console, even the creator of the biggest game of all time, Rovio.

Rovio takes steps into the more lucrative but more complicated console-business.

The End.
