Forums - Gaming Discussion - My girlfriend's art teacher said video games are not art. Do you agree?

I am absolutety not the artist type but my girlfriend is majoring in Art at our college (I major in computer networking and graduate next semester =) )

But I still do not agree with this assessment after playing games like Flower and Journey I think anyone who considers video games as not being art is foolish. But that is just my opinion.... What do you guys think!?

no

That teacher should tread carefully here. Roger Ebert said video games weren't art. Then he died.

Videogames are art, as art is a form of cultural expression itself.

That being said, if you consider videogames art, you just can't say "art games are the artsy ones", like Flower. No, if videogames are art, then a game like Call of Duty must be considered as well.

Some games can be art but not all games are art....if that makes sense in any way -_-.

Sure games are art. They require artists to be made for crying out loud, and there is a craftsmanship involved in making good game play.

That said gamers have too much of a stick up their asses about games having to be recognized as art. Almost anything can be art, big whoop.

And no, not just "high concept" games like Flower are art. Super Mario Bros, Tetris, BioShock, Donkey Kong Country, Uncharted, Halo, Angry Birds, are all art.

Her professor just teaches art without knowing what art is.

How sad.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Which college? I went to SVA.

Anyway, I had teachers before that didn't want to believe that certain mediums were considered art (comics, for example,) and all you can do is laugh it off. They think certain things, like video games, taint the word. They want to make it so art is only what they believe, which is totally anti-art.

Sure, not all games are art- most of them aren't, actually- same with movies, books, music, and actual paintings as well.

I agree with that, I am just saying anyone who does not consider Flower or Journey art are crazy imo.

Well, i agree with Scott Mccloud

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
