Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should Publishers follow the movie industry and force one platform per gen?

It would be good for consumers, but then again the movie industry has more than bluray, so it's not just one format.

It wouldn´t be good for consumers, consumers benefit from fierce competition between services/platform holders.

no it shouldn't, and the xbox one sales won't be so low as to justify ignoring it. I think the xbox one will do better once it has a price cut.

I also think it would be bad for the industry.

Once Halo releases I am pretty sure it will be more like 50% PS4, 40% Xbone, and 10% WiiU.

Lol no, no it wont.

If Xbone keeps tanking, publishers will push the PS4 more so it becomes the dominant platform that makes up for the loss of marketshare that Xbone lost from 360. PS4 nearly 2:1 of Xbone, must be bad business to have one platform performing well and the other hurting.

With that logic, one can only wonder why publishers supported platforms not PS2 during the 6th gen...

Oh! Because it doesn't matter which platform is on top, publishers will put games on a console that can move their games.

You know why Vita and Wii U isn't getting great support? Because they aren't very good at moving software. X1 does a better job at that even with a smaller userbase.

Yes because the original Xbox and GC had such amazing 3rd party support compared to the PS2 :P

the Porn industrie pushed for bluray, the movie industrie was going with hddvd AND blueray...

Wrong, the porn industry has pushed the HD-DVD-format until Q1/2008: http://arstechnica.com/uncategorized/2007/01/8602/

When Universal Studios and Warner Bros. dropped HD-DVD, the HD-war ended:

There is one thing the videogame industry shouldn't follow... and that's the movie industry.

The Xbox had great support 3rd party support, most notably games that weren't ported to PS2. In spite of having a userbase a fraction the size!

I repeat, developers don't just go to the top platform. They go where ever they can sell games. Last I checked, Xbox owners buy games. The X1 already has multiple million sellers.

The Gamecube had pretty good 3rd party support as well. But you know perfectly well that the Nintendo audience often flocks to 1st party games.

You're making generalizations. While its obvious it doesn't scale to sales ratios, the PS2 having 4 times as many games as the original Xbox makes it pretty damn clear that an awful lot of developers are more than happy to go single platform if sales are strong enough.

Not saying that's going to happen this gen, but past events have shown it's perfectly possible. I imagine the primary advantage Sony will gain if the current sales ratios continue will be the ability to make better deals, as well as make them harder for MS. Seeing as how much MS relied on buying exclusive content with the 360, that would be a pretty big blow.
