Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should Publishers follow the movie industry and force one platform per gen?

PS4 is already hitting +60% market share, and it has not even launched in Japan were that lead will only grow stronger. Once the Japan launch happens and the stock pilling ends, we should see sales ~250k a week going forward.

Already this year we know that Sony will be battling MS head on at their biggest push with XBO. They have Live TV, VOD, and PPV coming to the US some time this Summer. E3, Gamescom, and TGS are sure to see major games announcements, as SCEWWS has more than a handful of studios that have been working on PS4 titles for multiple years now with no reveal. The way things look Sony could be seeing a return to the dominance of PS2 or even something more.

With all that said. Should 3rd parties finally force the industry onto one standard platform as the movie and music industry have done? With development cost high, and little to no returns a very likly scenario if sales trends contiue for XBO and WiiU, this may be the only way to continue the development of big budget AAA titles. Cutting down to one platform would see massive saving, and huge proift boosts for games like Madden, Fifa, Call of Duty, and Assasins Creed. This kind of move may be the only way to keep the market from crashing itself, and keeping the set spec console market alive.

If Xbone keeps tanking, publishers will push the PS4 more so it becomes the dominant platform that makes up for the loss of marketshare that Xbone lost from 360. PS4 nearly 2:1 of Xbone, must be bad business to have one platform performing well and the other hurting.

It would be good for consumers, but then again the movie industry has more than bluray, so it's not just one format.

1 Platform is bullshit

as is following the movie industry.

Today because the game industry followed the movie industry games are not made because devs and publishers want to make great games but to make "acceptable" ones that still generate enough profit.

Mainstream is cancer for every kind of art.

The best thing you as a consumer can do is look for mainstream trends and do the exact opposite.

ALSO I think you confused yourself with what you said.
Bluray is the standard media so the equivalent of that would not be PS4s for everyone but 1 type of gaming disk playable on every device. Let that be playable on X1 and PS4 etc.
There is no such thing as 1 only bluray player A ton of companies make them. The players also differ in specs.

If you want the same scenario for consoles it would be like. PS4 X1 and WiiU are all going to have WiiU graphics but the rest of their processing power is used for stuff like upconverting SD footage etc or having wireless and stuff like that.

We already have that "1 format and you can choose your own device" scenario its called PC.
So If you want that to happen stop supporting the PS4 and buy a PC.

I think you're confusing platforms with formats here.

Regardless of what is good for consumers or not, a lot of publisher's benefit from multiple platforms so I don't think it would be easy to get a consensus from them. For example, Activision probably gets quite a bit of money from Microsoft for the timed DLC due to competition, which it would not get from a mono-console market. Capcom and Cyteck would never have received funding for DR3 or Ryse. Also a lot of the big players probably know they benefit from being able to do multi-console development as it keeps smaller competitors at bay who can only afford to do a single format. I guess it's kind of cynical, but for large publishers it's worth it because while it makes life a little more difficult for them, it makes life far harder for their smaller up and coming rivals if that makes sense.

the Porn industrie pushed for bluray, the movie industrie was going with hddvd AND blueray...

If you want them to follow the movie industry, every game should be playable on every console, regardless of who made it. On the movie side, all the tech and movie companies get together and decided what the standard is gonna be for the next format (screen resolution, mghz, medium capacity). So in videogames, Ninty, Sony, MS, Activision, Ubisoft, EA and all the rest get together and decide what the standard is gonna be for the next format (RAMgbs, GPU, CPU) so that every game bought will be playable on any console. Each console maker can offer their own peripheral (MS-Kinect and TV feautures, Ninty-gamepad and wiimotes) that will only be available on their console, but will be OPTIONAL and not required so that a Ninty game can be played on a MS console.

What you're asking for is a monopoly where Sony has complete control over video game distribution

Once Halo releases I am pretty sure it will be more like 50% PS4, 40% Xbone, and 10% WiiU.

Even in the Movie industry competeing formats ment one winner took all the gold and all other manufactures had to make that platform if they wanted to have a peice of the pie. There is no reason next gen MS or Samsung or however could not try and bring out a competitor to what Sony does with PS5. Sony had Beta and Toshiba had HD DVD. In the end, if someone can make a better platform, then great for everyone.

In addition, Sony has done a lot in the last few years to open up the PlayStation brand from being so propriatary. Playstation mobile is open to any hardware manufacturer that wants to adapt it, and going forward PS Now will be open to other manufactures as well.

I think this is the direction Sony is trying to push the games industry in, and that is the reason for the massive amount of support they are getting from the developers and publishers. Move the industry to one spec, and then Sony, MS, and Nintendo can all run there services through it as they please. Every game, peripheral, and service works on every device.
