Forums - Gaming Discussion - What ND should do about a TLoU sequel...

So it seems to me that a lot of people want Naughty Dog to let The Last Of Us be a solitary Gem of a game with no forced sequels (I am in that camp).  Other people will take any excuse they can get that allows them more TLoU brilliance (Hard not to be in this camp).

But what if Naughty Dog did a sort of...compromise.  While I do feel like a full game would be a little forced; I do think that there is a lot of backstory to be filled in.  What if instead they released "The Last Of Us: An Anthology."  This would sell for $40 and contain the following:

-3 Separate standalone Mini Campaigns that are 2-4 hours long each.  Examples include Tom and Joel's backstory before Ellie, Tom's journey with the fireflys, what happens to Bill, and what happened to Tes while she was gone...ETC.

-Updated MP.  This includes all past and DLC maps + A few new maps.  They could then add possibly a couple new weapons and skills to round it out.

-Release it on PS4.  Update the graphics to really show off the ND engine on new hardware and get this amazing series on Sony's new platform!

I feel like if they did this they could cash in a little bit and get their IP on the new flagship console.  And, they would not waste a ton of time or force an uneeded sequel that would undoubtably never live up to its predacessor.  What do you guys think?

No. Watchmen didn't need sequels or prequels. The recent "before watchmen" comics are ok, but could've done completely without. TLOU is fine the way it is, fans need to know when to stop asking for more and more until the franchise becomes tarnished by sequels or prequels. What else can they do for Mass Effect 4? You had the highest stakes in ME3 by threatening all organic life in the universe. Anything less in ME4 will feel like a step back, threatening the universe again will make Shepard-and-crew's-efforts/sacrifice pointless.

The way I feel about TLOU sequels or prequels is the same way I feel about the ME3 ending. Fans hated the ending to the game, demanded that it be changed completely, it didn't, but did get some alterations. Even if you enjoy the new ending and try to brush off the original, you can't because you consciously know that it's not part of the developers original vision, and is instead something shoehorned into the story simply because whiny fans didn't like the original one. Even if you try to enjoy yourself through added TLOU sequels/prequels/backstories, you can't because you know that it's something that was never meant to exist in the first place. It wasn't in the original game because the developers never had that in mind, that the only reason why it's there is because of unsatisfied fans clamoring for more and more instead of being satisfied with what they were given.

Going off on a different topic, I think Naughty Dog should stop making games and instead make CGI movies for Sony Pictures. They make some of the best story and cinematics, yet I think their gameplay is very basic. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing special about it, the gameplay bits could've been replaced by cinematics and the experience would've been the same

I would buy a PS4 version in a heartbeat. As for a sequel, we shouldn't to force it. Ellie and Joel's story seems complete, but maybe we could take a closer look at Marlene and the birth of the Fireflies. A fresh new IP from Naughty Dog could also be very interesting. I'm torn :)

Back stories are nice and all but I want a real sequel. The story ended quite abruptly and there is still so much to tell. Probably even enough for a second sequel. The back stories could fit in those nicely though.

I wouldn't mind developing this into a franchise. Ellie in here late teens would be a nice thing. It didn't hurt Uncharted's narrative to span across multiple games. There is nothing forced about it since ND are obviously capable and they wouldn't rush out anything bad.

A lot of people would disagree with you on that....

I'm in the camp that says no to a sequel all together. The Last of Us is easily one my favorite games of all time. The story telling, the voice acting, the character build up; all completely unprecedented. An amazing game to say the least. The reason why I don't want a sequel period is because I don't want to see ND try so hard at a sequel that tops the original, fail, and potentially ruin their reputation as a dev as a result. TLoU is something so special that to top it, even on next gen hardware, would be near impossible. A sequel would no doubt be welcome, but the backlash that would follow if it didn't top the original would be heartbreaking. ND is a very talented studio, and can certainly devote their efforts to a new series in a new genre and create something amazing.

All that being said though, if ND themselves were up to the challenge of making a sequel that exceeds the original, I'd be one to support it every step of the way and have the utmost faith in them. A potential definitive edition on PS4 would be nice too. ;)

Not make another one... The Last of Us had a strong story with a great ending and it proves that ND can have the most amazing of new IPs, I think they should just make a new IP and WoW us again

There are too many sequels in this industry as it already is... Some games are just best left without a second itteration

Uncharted took place in a much broader universe, and was able to have sequels because there was always room to top the last. UC1 was great and all, but even in 2007, it had plenty of room for improvement. While agree there are plenty more stories that could be told with TLoU, ND would have to find a way to exceed the first, and to anyone who has played it through and through, they know that would be quite the task... I guess at the end of the day though, if anyone could do it, it would be Naughty Dog.

Why would they? The story is far from over. What about a cure? What about the Fireflies? What about the world?

Do people really think all ends there and everyone lives happily ever after until everyone is dead and the earth becomes a lifeless rock?

That's not even including the development of the relationship of Ellie and Joel. What happens when Joel dies? Will Ellie be forever on the run from the Fireflies? Will she destroy them? Will she Sacrifice herself in the end? What new people are there to meet? Will she fall in love and have a child that's also immune?

There is so much stuff to tell in this world.  It could span over decades.

I feel like their should be a new TLOU game but it should not feature Joel or Ellie and should feature a different type of main characters.
