Forums - Gaming Discussion - playstation 4 looking like its going back to p2 like domination

Yeah, probably! I hope that boosts your enjoyment of the console at least ten times fold!

That PS2 77% market share was a one time thing, or atleast something that wouldn't be topped for a while.
I'd say PS4 - 48%, XBO- 38%, WiiU - 14% sounds about right

Still too early to tell. The insane sales of PS2 covers both hardcore gamers plus causals who only play Singstar/Buzz/Guitar Hero. Now more than 50% causal are gone. And more and more new kinds of entertainments came to the word. I doubt PS4 will reach PS2 level. Let us just see if PS4 can reach to PS3.

PS4 271k, XBO: 141k, WiiU: 49k

Whats being passed around as ndp, so 58% In NA last month.

Vg is showing 69k PS4, 18.1 X1 and 10.3 U so 70% market share in Europe last weeks sales.

And ill take the lions share of Japan soon enough.

That 77% is not that far from reality if things keep up.

I'd love another era like the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era, but I don't see that happening. Not just because of the sales (It's far too early to say the PS4 will achieve PS2 level sales. I wouldn't be making those predictions until at least 2-3 years into the generation), but because I feel mid tier games are a dying breed, and that the only options anymore are AAA titles or a super niche/indie titles. I'd love to be proven wrong, but it is also a little scary to see the industry begin to embrace things like abusing dlc and putting microtransactions in full priced games more and more.

I still have my original PS2 and I still play it pretty regularly. Those were great times to be a gamer.

Well, the beginning suggest this, that PS4 will dominate; also PS4 this time is the most powerful system and easy to develop for. But, just my opinion, it will not be as PS2 did, a bit less. XOne will give to PS4 more competition than the first XBox gave to PS2, in NA. In all the other territories, I believe PS4 will easy dominate, squashing its competitors.  So, in the Global, as a result, PS4 will dominate. My forecast.

I kinda felt this way since E3 after the Wii U wasn't doing so hot and the Xbone left such a bad taste in people's mouths.

Now I loved the PS2 era and everything (was a Gamecube fan at the time but still enjoyed everything the PS2 had to offer). I just can't he but feel that something is off this time. I guess it's because we're coming out of an "everybody wins" generation.

No, that is very unlikely. Shrinking market, shorter cycle, evenly distributed support between xbox/ps and not coming off of the momentum of a dominant market leader will ensure that, not to mention the fluctuation of the market and developr sphere as a whole.

75% + marketshare, monopolized 3rd party support and 14-15 years of sales are a thing of the past, look at how the PS3 is starting to crash (60-70% down yoy), this will also be the case for the PS4 and developing markets follow the trends of matured markets and won't aid it in having a huge life cycle either. Being the market leader won't ensure 150 million sales by default, this is no longer possible with a static product in the fast moving, revisionist consumer electronics market of today.

I'm 100% certain the PS4 will win but I'm equally certain that we will never see anohter PS2 situation; the market simply won't allow it and the conditions would need to be absolutely perfect, the PS2 arrived and thrived in the peak of an old and ongoing development paradigm and at the height of the economy globally and within Sony Corp, the PS4 has launched into the midst of a transitional and evolvement phase of the gaming industry, a console market segment about to suffer a contraction (look at the imploding handheld market) and is fronted by a company with little to no financial muscle to play at price wars or soak any form of losses for any time, and is released in the wake of the worst period in Sony's long history.

There is no way the PS4 will ever dominate or sell like the PS2, even as a market leader; the perfect circumstances are not present for the PS4 and won't be. This is the "Wii is the fastest selling console ever, of course it'll blast past the PS2!" all over again, both are/were equally unrealistic.

Way too soon, guys, waaaay too soon.

PS4 is dominating now mostly because it has the most competitive price right now. WiiU and Xbone still have a lot of potential sales if they would drop the price (and maybe eat money).

I think PS4 will win but I don't see a reason why it should dominate like the PS2, especially against the Xbone.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

it is dominating, but ps2-like? no...just no.
