Damn sleep, I've been late to the party. What did I miss?
It seems there was some serious overtracking going on?

PS4 is gonna win this gen, but damn if this industry doesn't look like its headed for trouble.
Wii U and Vita sales are horrific.
3DS and XB1 sales are disappointing.
There's only one platform out of the five new hardware pillars for this gen that's trending well right now.

Yes but the PS4 still had supply issues for most of January. We'll get a better picture of sales in February now that supply seems to have improved. |
I don't know why the hell everyone is keep forgetting that. It's still not possible to buy PS4 in Russia-CIS for retail price...

Nice downplay, but it applies to anything, for example, titanfall sales won't be as impressive they only seem so because other games did badly, the forums aren't that big they just seem that way because lots of others are smaller.
I'll be sure to look forward to you calling any successful result in future for your favored platform unimpressive and just a result of the competition doing badly. |
I'm not downplaying anything. I just don't think 271k sales is good for a console as hyped as the PS4. I suppose for some of January it was out of stock so it would have certainly crossed 300k had it been stock for the whole of January but that's not so great either since in December we heard many people claiming how much higher the PS4 would have been had it been in stock. Some people made statements that the PS4 could have sold twice as much had it had enough stock in NA. Well now its in stock and its sales aren't that impressive.
NeoGaf is saying 3DS might be in the 50-70k range ... that is far worse than even I would have dared to guess.
I think it was around 150k last year.
PS3>360. So the 360 was considerably overtracked. Not that the PS3 numbers are anything to brag about.
I wonder if Sony and Microsoft are joining Nintendo now in gradually ramping down production (for an eventual total end) to PS3, X360 and Wii in all markets. If you look at the US and Japan, I'd say less than four million Wiis, PS3s, and X360s are to be sold from this point forward (<1m Japan, <3m US). The non-US/Japan/Western European world still pays $300-$400 for consoles, as opposed to the ~$200 PS2 was at in 2009, so you're not exactly talking about a huge population in those areas either that have a lot of demand for the systems, given median personal income of $8,000 - $12,000 for places like Mexico or Brazil.

Everything looks bad. The PS4's sales are good but nothing spectacular.
I agree that the prospects for this generation's consoles are looking a little dismal, at least in NA.
So I guess 3DS is monstrously overtracked if they only got to 70k or so this month.
3DS is awesome. PS4 hype won't last. Wii U is still struggling...
