Forums - Movies & TV - Why was Twilight so special? (Other similar films failing)

50 Shades of Grey will flop. I've heard from some sites that they are cutting some of the explict scenes and many of the audience still don't like the main cast members. The thing that also made Twilight movies so popular with the young female demographic was Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

So casting on these other films has been an issue? I have no clue who is "hot" with young females, have those two had a successful film outside of the Twilight series?

If you want to compare with another movie, compare it with hunger games.

The same company is behind both books and movies.

I mentioned how Hunger Games actually draws male audience pretty well, much like Harry Potter.  Twilight is very much a female series in terms of demographics.

Are Summit and Lionsgate the same? Honestly not sure.

Here's a question then, is "50 shades of Grey" the next big female audience film series? I believe the book sales are greater than even Twilight.

No idea, didn't read.

And yes, summit is owned by lionsgate.

I never understood. I thought they were terrible movies.

In terms of critical response I do not think any of these films had favorable reviews, so that lack of buzz didn't seem to deter from the Twilight series either.

I'm not a movie critic per se. I am happy with anything that entertains me. I wasnt entertained at all by the Twilight movies. They were dumb and the acting of the main female was abysmally bad.

I joke with my frieds that someone should make a romatic comedy with her and Keanu Reaves. Can you imagine? lol

The other films weren't as popular book series as Twlight (~120 million sold) and 50 Shades of Grey (~90 million sold). I meant in comparision to these two that 50 Shades will flop because of casting, removal of explicit scenes, and the demographic it is targeting.

I do not disagree. I did not just mean critics, but general public response tended to be that is was poor or cheesy.  Yet, this criticism meant nothing for a series that stands alongside titans of money making in the industry.  it just seems odd that some "me too!" project has not even managed to successful. Not saying another juggernaut, but at least one that is profitable.

This trends tend to see at least one other success story. Chronicles of Narnia did well enough to get two sequels in wake of Lord of the Rings success. Admittedly different demographics, but get my point to a degree.

I am bumping this thread because may finally have witnessed this strategy hit profits again.

So, Divergent could breath life into the teen female demographic for Hollywood. Curious why this one found success after so many faltered.

Its because of the books series. There really is no reason why the book series was so much more successful than the other series of books other than they were able to cross into mainstream market. Most of these other series being made into films had only a small fraction of the readers twlight had. Twilight just had a bigger base to start with, which the movies success helped grow.

Don't try to understand girls tastes... I tried coming up with a different response to this thread, but in the end, when I think about what girls like and what I like, I get a headache.

I played a game recently called 7 Days to Die, and the guys would usually enjoy scavenging and killing zombies. The girls usually enjoyed decorating their lakeside houses and making sure they got the good furniture from the fancy houses.

I read a girl manga once which I could enjoy a little, and it was about a magic academy. The girls, instead of actually casting practical spells to destroy the monsters terrorizing them, would cast really flashy spells like making a rainbow appear. The more powerful the spell the more it would scare the monsters (NOT KILL) back to where they came from.

Girls are just something you have to accept as being different from guys. I consider things like twilight as being the girl version of the ecchi genre. Don't try to understand it just accept and hide away from it.

What's really impressive about Twilights boxoffice what that 80-90% of those that watched it in the Cinema were females

meanwhile Harry potter had about 50/50 and Hunger games 60/40 M/F ratio

atleast it was when I went and saw them.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)
