Forums - Gaming Discussion - Real world criticism for talking about gaming.

Today at work I was talking to a coworker about Tomb Raider on PS4 since I am borrowing it from him and then got into a discussion about how. GameStop screwed me over on my Bravdly Default CE, although I did luck out and find one at BestBuy.

Anyways, afterwards my coworker who sits behind me in the office asks me "How could you honestly just sit there and talk the whole time abou video games? Don't you think it makes you look sad and like a loser?"

Not that it bugs me too much. I am engaged, have a 4 year old daughter who is super smart and very active in sports and I own my own home. He works tons of overtime, has children from precious relationships and spends plenty of time talking about his fantasy sport teams. So he is no picture of perfect manliness either.

Anyone else get criticism like this as well from time to time and if so, does I bother you?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

no and it wouldn't bother me there is 6billion people i don't need them all to like me.

Sad and a loser? Not ever, everyone enjoys games at some level. They sound jealous they have nothing in life to be as excited about.

at my workplace, the 4 people including myself in the department were all gamers.

1 was an xbox fan, 1 was a pc fan, me the PS fan, and the last one a PC/PS gamer.

so for me, it was actually the opposite. although we usually end up with never ending conversations that are like rock paper scissors.

Gaming still has an odd faux pas about it. Biggest entertainment in the UK but if you said in a conversation to random people 'I play such and such a game'. They will most likely think you a loser. I never ask people why they think this however, I do throw a few comparisons at them. I says "Some people choose to read or watch TV, I play games. No difference in the fact we are all just sitting there doing something we enjoy." This is rare mind you, most my friends/social circles are fine with it.

This said, it's the same for comics (larger infact if you consider what Big Bang Theory has done), I read comics but I actually don't usually tell people outright because of the image that comes with it. I generally don't display my fanboyism because of this faus pas about it. Then again I don't like comic book readers that are all nerdy about it (collect figurines/cosplay/even t-shirts).

Hmm, pie.

Sometimes I get called out for playing Pokemon and the likes in public (I'm probably the only one in my town who plays it), but I ignore it.

You should have asked him the same thing about his fantasy sport teams. Do it for everything he ever says or does. How could you talk about TV, don't you think it makes you look like a sad loser?

Yes, but that goes with everything. Does it bother me? No. It's just annoying that someone doesn't like something you do, think they are better.

My mom openly discusses video games in public. One day, I hope to be as cool as her. I act totally ignorant until I find someone who is just as geeky as me. I'm like a geeky Goku but I suppress my power levels.

This is something that actually quite annoys me. Here in the UK there seems to be a stigma attached to gaming, at least with the people I interact with. As an example, a while back me and my boyfriend decided to get our own place, but before we found somewhere my mum moved to a different city so I moved into my boyfriends dad's house. I get on with my boyfriend's little sister very, very well, and whilst living there I bought Borderlands. Whilst playing it, my boyfriend's sister came into the room and started watching, then she wanted to join in and we both got really into having two-players on Borderlands. I bought Borderlands 2 (didn't buy the original until just before Borderlands 2 released) and we both played that A LOT! During this time I began noticing my boyfriend's dad giving me disapproving looks and complaining loudly about gaming in general, and complaining to the sister that she should be doing something constructive. He watched TV a lot, and I believe gaming is a far superior pursuit as you are actually interacting with the on-screen content as opposed to just sitting there mindlessly watching.

Excuse the story, but to cut it short, yes video games seem to be frowned upon whilst watching TV is perfectly acceptable.
