Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Do you need the gamepad?

Wondering how the Wii U works. Do you need the game pad and censor for the console to function? Or can I just use a pro Controller And everything be good? I'm asking because I seen one for sell without the pad and censor.

You can use the pro controller to work the console, gamepad just makes it a shit ton easier but yea, the wiiU works just fine without the gamepad unless you really want to draw in miiverse

The Gamepad is there, you're stuck with it....it's just, always there. You can't even watch Netflix without it staying on. If you try to turn it off, Netflix turns off. It's beyond stupid why they didn't put a button on the thing to turn the screen off.

Other than that, it's a great. It took some getting use to, but now it feels just fine.

Don't buy it because you need the Game Pad. Sure, you can play games that support the pro controller, but you need the pad to get into settings and update the system. I love the pro controller and us it every chance I get. It's light and comfortable and doesn't run out of charge as quickly as the pad.

So I don't need the censor bar either? I don't care about any extra features, this going to be a mario box only for me.

The sensor bar is only there to make the Wii motes work. You don't need it and you can buy it if you change your mind. I still think you need the pad though.

Nope, there is a power button on the pro controller and u press that to turn it on after u sync it to the wiiU first that is and you navigate using the analog sticks, you need the sensor bar to play wii games or games with motion controls but for mario, nope

Just remember to press X on the main screen to switch to the home screen menu

So I tried everything with the pro controller just now and it seems that a few things doesn't seem to work for me such as the eshop... I can't seem to do shit with it which is weird... And also the web browser doesn't seem to work correctly either... And most importantly, the System Settings don't work either so maybe its not such a good idea to get it without the gamepad after all... Also, if you get a wiiU, you may (not sure) have to sync a gamepad to it the first time as a mandatory requirement (but I am not too sure)

I've said the same thing. Why the hell don't they have a shut off option? Holding down the power button shouldn't turn off the wiiu, it should pull up an option to either a: turn off the controller or b: shut the system off. Hopefully they will add that simple feature in a future system update.

I wouldnt really see that as a problem to be honest, if you cant pick up the gamepad for eshop browsing/buying every once in a blue moon you're probably better off buying a 3DS
