Didn't microsoft lose about this much? in tablets alone? Why is this such a 'huge' deal.

If only the invested more on saving the vita so that they would have had tons of money coming in from both the ps4 and the vita... That 1.1 billion loss still would be rough but least they would be getting more money coming in but instead, most of their money will be coming from the ps4 and mobile which is too bad... I know the vita is still making them money, specially with the new over-priced LCD version at Europe but they would have made more if they didn't abandon it

Do you have a sense of how money they are losing and what the gaming division is bringing to the table? Sony is bleeding money in general and having a good gaming division (good results at least) is not going to save them unfortunatly, even if the PS4 is doing extremely well, it is just one division...

I never said it will save them... All I said is that it would help them... If a company is losing this much money, any additional income from any devision will help but since they didn't make the vita a success, it wont help at all but if they did, it would have helped at least a bit more than its doing now

Oh true, I'm not disagreeing with that! But yah, it would be a very small bit of help based on their current situation :(

Sony is a mess. Right now they are going to downsize + sell one or two divisions.
It will help them in a short term but I do not see any bright future for them.

Right now they are bleeding money even with the help of the PS4 launch. Now just imagine the next quarter, the revenue from PS4 will go down for sure and then what? They will come up with another plan and continue to lose investors money.

Best option for everybody would be to have Samsung or someone else buying them and maybe keep few divisions alive (like the gaming one as the Playstation brand is very valuable). They also need to get right of that clown CEO...

He isn't the one that made those mistakes. It was Sir Howard Stinger. It's like taking up the position of presidency and being blamed for all the prior presidents errors.

When one or more division in a company lose money (does not matter how much actually) but the whole company is doing a large amount of profits; it is fine and frankly in the case of tablets or even console (360/PS3) it is acceptable because it is a long term plan.

When the whole company is bleeding money (investors' one) and is running strait into bankruptcy; it is a huge deal... And Sony has been doing that for a quite a time now.

didn't they just get upgraded? Stock is going up, PS4 is selling better than expected. The outlook is actually better than it has been in a number of years. People just see one number and think that's the whole story.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Yah I was a bit harsh there. But I still believe he did not made the right decisions to come back from the red.

I believe it is the opposite, you see their stock going up and you believe that's the whole story.

What about all the money they lost during the past few months/years and what about the next quarter? This one was bad even with the launch of the PS4, imagine the next one... The stock went up because they announced their intention of selling their PC division, not because of the PS4... And it is just another tentative from Sony to stop bleeding money; it is too early to say if things are going to be better.

Sell the gaming division to Nintendo. Sony could stand for "Subdivision of Nintendo, Y'all". I see their movies doing great, the own Spider-Man after all, and their consoles sell well. How things have gotten so bad is beyond me.

The 1.1b loss on paper looks bad (what you all are calling doom/gloom) but what they are doing is financially beneficial. If they don't cut their losses with Vaio now, or restructure the TV business they will lose MORE than the 1.1b. This is why Sonys shares have been raising, think of the long term rather than the short term.

It is very bad no matter HOW you want to spin it. Not only did they sell a few buildings THIS fiscal year which got them a couple B$, they are still posting a loss. This means that had they not sold those buildings, they would have lost another 3-4B$+!

I apologize, but you just can't spin a 1.1B$ loss into positive news. Especially when they sold a few of their buildings in FY2013.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Sony is losing over 1 billion dollars, therefore Nintendo is doomed
