There is no massive fallout. The WiiU and Vita are not selling because of lack of games.

This gen will be somewhat smaller, because i don't expect it to last as long as the previous one.

For home consoles, I'm thinking 7th gen will end up at around 285 million or so and I think the 8th gen will struggle to get past 180 million.

Something like:

PS4: 85-90 million
One: 60-65 million
Wii U: 22-25 million

Handhelds probably about:

3DS: 80-85 million
Vita: 20 million

Basically, I'm expecting the handheld and home consoles combined to sell about the same amount as the home consoles did alone in the 7th gen. If anyone wonders why; take a look at some of my posts in the UNITY thread, I have written fairly extensive posts on it in there (hint; I think this will be a short generation).

Casual crowd really inflated last gen's numbers. Since they moved on to somewhere else, there will be an obvious decline.
And Vita won't get anywhere near PSP numbers, so you also have that. But when you only consider PS4, One and 3DS, I think the numbers will be, proportionally, not very far from 7th gen. I honestly do not expect a massive decline or the death of the consoles (unless there's a drastic change of paradigm next gen).

Edit: And just for shits and giggles, here are my predictions:

3DS - 112 million

Vita - 41 million

PS4 - 107 million

One - 72,2 million

Wii U - 37 million

Total: 369,2 million

I can see someone saying I'm a little too optmistic, but I think it's plausible enough.

at least 70% of the lost will come from Nintendo, probably 60mill lost from the ds to 3ds transition and 70mill from the wii to the wiiU. The PS4 should have an overall gain over the PS3 and the vita will lose close to 40mill users and I think the X1 wll be over the X360 also.

SOny 60M on Hhelds and would only gain a bit on Home department n a shorter period

Msoft 30M from 360 to ONE

Seems that the PS4 is looking good today, but the total sales for it will be 70 million tops. The WiiU will be 30 million tops. The XB1 will be 50 million tops.
