Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft sends Karate Kicks to Chromebooks

hmm, interesting. Is MS very worried about Chrome Books? It certainly looks that way. Oh well, for the moment, they have nothing to worry about since hardly anyone is buying them but anything can happen.

lol @ disolitude and is incorrect info on chromebooks.

Gotta do anything to stop chromebooks rise, huh?

Chromebooks don't "require" internet. Most primary apps have an off-line mode that works VERY well. Google drive and all of its office products, games, great number of other apps... etc. Of course having internet takes a good product and makes it great. But really, if you have NO internet, then idk even know what you do with your pc.

There is a reason tablets are outselling laptops. Its because nearly all mass consumers, while away from work, don't need ANYTHING MS or Mac can do in their OS.

All they need is multimedia, internet and some games. All of which is not only done very well on a chromebook, but done better in many cases.

The chrome app store has web dev software, image editing such as photoshop, file sharing tools, tons of android-ish games, full office suite (not as robust as MSOffice.. but if you need that for a specific use then you're at work on a PC anyways... anything a normal user needs, drive does), full web (better than tablets), no need for virus, on/off faster than anything else, touchscreen models for $299 or less, exchangeable SSDs/HDDs/SDCards, free nearly infinite cloud storage if you use google services appropriately, ... so much win its disgusting anyone without a specific work-related or Steam related need has a Win/Mac laptop over a chromebook.

For those wondering why MS makes an attack ad like this.. its because Chromebooks are selling better than any other laptop in the lower-priced category and all other PC markets are still in decline.

If you're curious if you could live entirely in Chrome.. then just try it on your current laptop/desktop. Use ONLY Chrome and its appstore for a few weeks. You may need to check out more than one chrome app to ensure it meets your needs.

As soon as steamOS is fully launched, I'll have zero need for windows and its overpriced and bloated OS/Office.

What? All this time I thought chromebooks had no internal storage, so I never even gave them the time of day.

Ironic Microsoft is talking about having to be always online.

Seems a little arrogant to trash a competitor with such a small market share.

Especially considering it's losing the battle with Sony and wanted the Xbox One to be online only, yet they tout that as a reason not to buy a chromebook?

Never had an always online policy... Merely a drm check every 24h huge difference imo.. But hey people wanted ed to find issues where there wasn't for most people...

Sorry MS, stop trying to cause problems where there isn't, Google are double the company you are without Bill Gates

Windows is still best just because of how well it's supported. If you deal with professional programs you're going to need windows one way or another. For me it's best to just have it as my main OS instead of dealing with multiple ones.

There isn't a single service Google. Does better than someone else beside maybe search and maps... Everything else has better competing offer and even maps does for certain specific applications....

chrome and everything Google is the prime example of the mcdonaldization of the consumer electronic business... Being number one and making more money, never meant you are doing better products...

even chrome browser is a piece of shit... Speaking of bloated... It's a supposed feather made out of lead.... Android is the single most bloated os even the basic one... It's the vista of the smartphone business... Google doc is a joke... And Gmail should have died faster than MySpace...

and people don't need regular PC.... Please how many times I have to explain to my parents and their friends why they can't do this or that on their craplet.... Ignorance and price is the only reason they sell.. And the later is not even true...

tablet PCs is the future... It's just a question of time before they aliens in price... I'll wait for the day when a pure Linux distro will be able to run as much exotic HW than windows... You can't be light weight and versatile... Win is way better (with os x) for most people uses hands down if they have only one device...

For the multiple posters saying chromebook sales are miniscule and that ms has nothing to worry about, npd reported that chromebooks accounted for 21% of all netbook and laptop sales in the US in 2013.

https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/news/press-releases/u-s-commercial-channel-computing-device-sales-set-to-end-2013-with-double-digit-growth-according-to-npd/

So, yes me actually does have something to worry about if that growth rate continues, as every chromebook sold is one less Windows license, office purchase and internet explorer user.

I still don't understand why Chromebook exists in the world. If you only want to surf on the internet, why not go to purchase a tablet? If you want to have a PC running legacy software, then windows pc is your best choice.
