Forums - Sales Discussion - It's not Xbox One versus PS4

LivingMetal said:
The Xbox One is selling less than the PlayStation 4, and now all of the sudden its all about the games. Deal with it. It's always been all about the games even when an Xbox console was outselling a PlayStation one. And even then console unit sales were being discussed, and there is no difference about that now. For some, the 800 pound gorilla is the success of the PS4 over the Xbox One thus far and would do most anything to avoid facing it.

Lol I get the feeling that you've been holding that grudge for years.

Back to the RELEVANT point... yeah I agree with the OP. Disinterest is a great problem in this seemingly malleable market.

I really really really disagree with that. PS4 will have a fair share of 3rd party exclusives. If you're into Japanese games, it'll have a boat load of 3rd party exclusives. The XBONE unlike the Wii U should keep relatively good 3rd party support, but that doesn't mean there won't be games that skip it. Heck already PS4 is getting some 3rd party games that aren't on XBONE. Injustice skipped XBONE probably because of KI instead of console sales, but it's still an example of a pub not being compelled to bring everything to XBONE anyway.

Injustice could skip the One because it came to both the 360 and PS3.

The same won't happen for future 8th gen games. Unless you mean they will also come to 360/PS3 as well, which would reflect poorly on the new consoles anyway.

People thinking that the 3rd party support will jump to the PS4 are too funny. Less than 90 days into the next gen and people are picking one consoles continued dominance for the whole generation? The reason 3rd party support will continue for the XB1 isn't based only on the XB1 itself, but the XBOX ecosystem that M$ is creating across all of it's platforms, not just XB1. Unlike Sony or Nintendo, M$ has a huge connection through windows and it's mobile devices that reach BILLIONS, not 80-120 million. People need to open their minds to the real global market.

It is near the end of the end....

Maybe that is something that needs to happen.

The market is becoming dull with the current HD model. There are a limited number of FPS and TPS that people will buy until they get bored.
I think the sucess of so many kickstarter projects shows this. Gamers want and the market needs variety, and the current model isnt allowing this.

What you say is not necessarily wrong but it is a very LIMITED and NARROW look at the game. You are only looking at it from a GLOBAL perspective as if all regions are affected only by the average sales. That's just not true. Your arguments WILL hold for North America, but elsewhere NOT.

There will be many region specific or region tailored games. Because of the dominance of PS4 in Europe, and in Japan, and basically everywhere but the English Speaking Countries, you'll see a huge shift towards playstation, many of those titles going with either of the following options...

- there will be a lot more third party games exclusive to PS4 than XB1,

- there will be more games created with PS4 in mind first, then ported over

- there will be many games released first on PS4

- there will be games with more additional content for PS4

- the graphical gap will widen as there will be more games taking advantage of the supeior PS4 hardware.

The relative experience you'll get to enjoy with XB1 will heavily depend on your region. The LEAST disparity will be in NA, which is pretty much what we see today (or a bit larger), but the gap will turn into a chasm elsewhere, especially in Japan (and to some extent in the Continental Europe).

I agree with you in a lot of ways.

However, my post is aimed at VGC users who talk about PS4 or One winning as if it mattered to THEIR gaming experience. And VGC are mostly from English speaking countries, or at are looking to recieve the same games as them.

I disagree that the graphical gap will widen, or it will be noticeable that PS4 was the lead platform. Third parties have a huge incentive to achieve and promote parity despite the technology. I think the evidence of the end of last year shows that will be the norm.

This won't be a last Console, because Nintendo will release the most powerful Console in 2018, and then again in 2024, no matter if there is or isn't a PS5 & TWO in 2023.

This basically sounds like a PS4 & ONE are DOOM no matter what they do, Thread.

If anyone were to take the OP seriously, they would just buy a Wii U during 2014, to play Bayonetta 2 & The Wonderful 101 & Mario Kart 8 & Star Fox U & Metroid U & Zelda U & F-Zero U & Smash Bros. Four Wii U & Killer Freaks from Outer Space & Lego City Undercover & Pikmin 3 & Rhythm Thief 2 & ZombiU & the Definitive Version of multiplatform games like Need for Speed/Batman Arkham/Rayman/Mass Effect/Deus Ex/Darksiders/Lego (enter subtitle here)/Spider-Man/Call of Duty/etc.

I just don't think most of these users on this thread are going to drink the OPs Nintendo Cool-Aid, at least not for up to 3 years.

Well-there always have been dynamics in the market.

Companies & ip's rising and falling and all companies rather released their games on all platforms as a release on 2 platforms doesn't need further advertising and just 10% of the game budget for a port but can double sales & profits with these 10%.

if its not abot xbox vs ps than its about behaviour of corporations towards gamers and some are rewarded for the good things they have (360) and some are punished for trying to treat people like idiots(xb1)
And as long
as people can chose between different concepts(tv based/xbox),more game based(ps4) or a new controller concept
everything is fine.
Gamers who tend to watch tons of tv may take the box,for gaming ps4 or candy style exclusives wii u.
(though i still don't understand the original concept of the xbox1.
It was meant to be always online with heavy focus on digital games and cloud but...cable box???
Everything that a cable box can do can be done with internetstreaming .Using gaikai or cloud or whatever can offer you exactly the same.Strange decision by a company that is 100% in software and pushing online while 0% in tv?!?

Well for the first year or two into a new gen, almost all games come out on the new and old systems. It certainly doesn't reflect poorly on the new consoles.

I think I'm understanding your point better now. It's not that it's worth it to make XBONE ports, but just that the PS4 version will not sell enough. Are you expecting PS4 to flop or something?

OP it's exactly PS4 vs Xbox One.
EA came out and say that the reason Titanfall is exclusive is because they though Xbox One would have dominate the PS4.
So yes. If one console is winning easily, then Dev will support that console the most and will probably get more 3rd party exclusives.
Let us just imagine those 2 scenarios
1st Scenario: Titanfall delivers something that has never done before, wow the power of the cloud. OMG quantum break has pushed the cloud to new levels can this game can only be done in Xbox One. And those two new IP goes on and sell 10 millions. You really think third party developers are not going to use the power of the cloud and create some new IP to take advantage of the resources that TitanFall and Quantum Break got with the could and dedicated servers and won't care at all about all the talk about the power of the PS4
2nd Scenario: Infamous Second Son is the first truly next gen game. Visual are way above anything else seeing so far, the gameplay, the graphics and the vast city of Seattle with all the details that can only be done in PS4. OMG wow the Order 1886 is like something that was never done before, the smoother controls, all the extra function you can do with the D-pad, this new kind of gameplay and graphic that can only be done thanks to the power of the PS4. Then both games go and sell around 10 millions copies. 3rd party developer will try to get some new IP and take advante of the power of the PS4 and have them exclusives if Xbox can handle the power to make sure they are not left behind.
it's all about making money and they will choose which way is the best for their new IP
1) Go multiplats.
2) Go Xbox One exclusive
3) Go PS4 exclusive

I think companies that spam out entries in series every year simply have to accept that declines will come eventually.

Let's look at R* on the other hand....they spend years working hard and it seems to pay off.

GTAV has become the best selling in the series, GTAIV legged its way up to 25 Million shipped too.

Companies should become a bit more humble once more!

franchise fatigue is real and companies should cycle IPs.  I'm the biggest Ratchet fan you'll ever meet but after ACiT (my favorite game ever) they should have taken a break until PS4.  If A4O, FFA, and Nexus hadn't taken so much interest out of the series (even though Nexus is alright) then a PS4 game would get some serious hype especially if they had devoted a couple years to it.

Ratchet Nexus felt like a nice return to the start of the gen and a little bit fresh (despite being exactly the same) especially if you skipped the crap ones!

Yeah, I do feel that gaming is falling apart. A strong PS4 and XB1 are probably good, but I still don't think it is going to end all that well. Just look at the percentage of the total sales of all HD games that were taken up by FIFA, CoD, AC and GTA. I haven't checked the numbers myself, but I am going to suggest that it is an alarmingly large percentage.

The problem is, the market for most games has not grown at anywhere near the growth of their budgets and that's a problem that's not going away

also the price has stayed the same since the NES era about while production costs have continued to grow.  Some devs know how to manage their money though.  Infamous hasn't sold AMAINGLY but it remains profitable enough to make sequels.
