I think this is amazing news actually, I guess once they drop the 3DS in a few more years. They will drop the Wii U at the same time and focus on a single platform. Thus, no longer will games have to be made for just one system! That pretty much means we will get Nintendo games out the ass! I just hope now they focus on getting aquisitions to break up between Nintendo releases.

i think what he means by this is that with the next handheld and console, the relationship between the development on the 2 devices will not be like Mac to Windows like the case it is today, but more like a 400$ Windows 8 PC vs. a 4000$ one, developement will be the same as both have the same API and possibly same OS (they look similar now), and both platforms will still have a bunch of exclusives made for each for-factor, but development between the 2 devices will be a piece of cake.

That's what they probably mean. People are thinking they would release a handheld and home console with the same hardware, but that would be the end for them. It's not possible to create a competitive home console with handheld level hardware.

Now, a common OS with similar APIs would be a very nice idea since it would allow to easier downgrades on home titles to run on the handheld.
