Forums - Sales Discussion - Michael Pachter predicts PS3 will win this round of console wars

yes this is what I m trying to say.
For the moment Wii sell very well but dont have "cinematic game" except maybe RE4.
So a part of PS2 owners, those that are looking for cinematic game, are not very interested in Wii.
So if Wii want to attract these gamer, it should possess some cinematic game too.
Why not sharing the multiplateform game like Xbox360 and PS3 are doing by adapting the game graphism with Wii ?
Maybe, E3 will reveal some big news about it.

So keep ur rude language for yourself,
I just answered u that I never stated that "Halo is coming to PS2"
as you were suggesting in your first 1 line post completely out of the thread.
Take it easy next time, thx u.

Next time don't tell me to go to hell or shut my mouth.

As for Halo, I know what you didn't say. My point was merely that it was an odd choice to include in the midst of a bunch of mostly PS-exclusive (or formerly exclusive) franchises like Final Fantasy.

Halo is not a PS game, since it is Xbox exclusive, but a lot of PS owners are interested in playing it (because if there was 1 very famous game on Xbox it was Halo). Halo is typically the type of game that PS2 owners would have been happy to play. Mario is not. Mario is an exclusive Nintendo game that don't really appeal PS2 owners (too cartoon)

I was just stated that if PS2 owners want to play to their favorite game, they have to purchase PS3 or Xbox360. Yes, Halo is not a favorite PS2owners game but I m pretty sure they will be happy to test it since there is a lot of hype on it.

If Wii is able to get some of these "cinematic game" (like Halo/FF/GTA/GT are), that have make the popularity of the PS name, then it will better attract PS2 owners.
That is all I wanted to say :

Wiimote + nintendo "good-cartoon-game" + PS "cinematic game" + low price
==> Wii WIN by KO

I don't really see your argument ...

Kingdom Hearts, Crash Bandicoot, Dragon Quest, Simpsons, Lego Starwars, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Sonic, Dragon Ball Z, Everybody's Golf and so on are all multi-million selling games with a very similar cartoon style to Mario ... Had Mario (or any Nintendo property) been released for the Playstation it would have been one of the top selling games.

People bought the Playstation for other games, they didn't "avoid buying the Gamecube/N64 because it had Mario on it" ... The fact of the matter is the Wii will likely have more games released for it meaning it will have more "other games" that attract users than the PS3 will have

More other games the wii will have than the ps3 will ever have? there is no proof to know that the wii would have more games than the ps3 will have in the future, According to sony the ps3 will have some 150+ games by march 08, three are not much if any hardcore wii games. The ps3 has some hardcore games coming in the near future with uncharted being one of those other games you talk about. The fact of the matter is that the ps3 will have more hardcore games than the wii might have in the long term.

Question 1: How many PS2 owners also own a GBA/DS and a Mario game?

Question 2: How quickly would Sony fanboys have raised the roof if Nintendo had gone software-only and declared Mario a Sony exclusive franchise?

Question 3: There are 120+ million PS2s out there. The best selling franchise (GTA) sold upwards of 13 million copies each, barely a 10% attach rate. The other top franchises were Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts (could be lumped in with FF), MGS, Madden and Jax and Dexter. The rest of the million-selling games ranges from RE4 to Crash Bandicoot. So... what exactly is a typical PS gamer?

It is simply a matter of ecconomics  [ Larger Userbase + Less Expensive Development = More games ] ...

The PS3 may have more "Hard-Core" games but most gamers are not interested in "Hard-Core" games. (By definition, a game being "Hard-Core" would imply that it didn't appeal to the masses)

Question 1: How many PS2 owners also own a GBA/DS and a Mario game?

A lot ...

The GBA and Nintendo DS were/are very popular systems and a large portion of PS2 owners would have owned both systems. It is likely that, since Mario Games are amazingly popular, a reasonably large portion of gamers bought both a PS2 and a Mario game for their portable system.

Question 2: How quickly would Sony fanboys have raised the roof if Nintendo had gone software-only and declared Mario a Sony exclusive franchise?

In an instant ...

Question 3: There are 120+ million PS2 owners out there. The best selling franchise (GTA) sold upwards of 13 million copies, barely 10%. I didn't imply there was a typical Playstation gamer ... I just said that people bought a Playstation for 'other games' (implying some unspecified game) and they didn't choose the Playstation to avoid Mario ...

Understood. I wasn't under the impression that you said there was a typical PS2 gamer (that was lulubelle) -  I was attempting to reinforce your point.

Whatever finally comes down the pipe, there is so much diversity in the PS2 audience (which is to be expected given its size) that pretty much any game could tap into that market. So while there will be some who abhor Mario-type games, there will also be those that flock to it. If anything, the PS2's success just goes to show that the console that can appeal to the broadest variety of gamers has the best chance to succeed over all. Note lulubelle's earlier list of Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Grand Tourismo, and Metal Gear Solid actually has little comonality besides the platform, which, I think, makes lulu's comment that Mario (or pretty much any game - even shitty ones) are not a game that PS2 owners would play completely fallacious.

1/ "they didn't "avoid buying the Gamecube/N64 because it had Mario on it""

==> In fact, I m not able to found the post where I saied this
I maybe blind, or you have made an error
Whatever sorry, because I dont consider people AVOID Mario
As u saied, they bought PS for other game than just Mario-like game.

2/
well, I never stated that the PS/PS2 owners was not diversified.
I was more stating that the main series PES/FF/MGS/GT/GTA are not cartoon like series. They are Cinematic game series that have made the success of the PS name. Of course cartoon-like series exist on PS too but they dont represent the best sells (except maybe for japan with EveryBody's golf and DragonQuest) . Just consider GTA and you get the point ...

(I m not talking about DS/gameboy so dont try to change of subject because you are out. We all know that nintendo is overdominated this market.)

In Fact, Mario is nothing for a average PS/PS2 owner because PS success is in part explain by the release of more mature game that nintendo was not able to release (except 007 on N64). It is why PS/PS2 are so popular.
Of course the diversity is good point too. But cartoon-like dont have made the success of Sony.
At the opposite, Nintendo always mainly focus on their cartoon character :
Mario/DonkeyKong/zelda that just don't appeal the PS generation.
Do you know why ?
Because a big part of this new generation dont have played to NES or SNES (except japanese player maybe). With his mature game Sony was able to open the market to more mature gamer that were not familiar to nintendo game as Mario.
Mario is more appealing for people who bought N64 or Gamecube that are mainly nintendo fan.

3/ You know, my point was not about Mario in fact,
I have talked about Mario cause you put me on it.
My point is about the fact that the Wii is able to attract a part of the gamer market

Not because of Mario lol

but because of Wiimote and the price !!

BUT another part of the videogame market, that like to play FPS/GTA/GodofWar/FF/GT that are cinematic game, is still not interested in the wii.

I was just pointing out that IF the wii is able to get some cinematic game like sequel of the best appealing cinematic game that are :
FF/HALO/GT/GTA/MGS THEN Wii will simply DESTROY Sony and Microsoft !!!!!!!!!

IF the wii is not able to do this, then a part of the gamer market (significative in fact) will still want to purchase a PS3 or a Xbox360 to get the last FF/GTA.

4/ Oh misterd, you maybe desesperate about the fact that you are wrong since your firts post that was simply useless and out of the thread but my login is not : lulubelle or lulu,
but, libellule,
and keep your "falacious" for you.
Thx you.

Note : ALL the last sequel of FF/GTA/GT/MGS were released on PS2 and PS (all the sequel for GTA/GT).
so, yes, I see a lof of comonality.

Please use the quote button, italics, colouring, or some other method to seperate your quotes; I find it amazingly difficult to read your posts most of the time.

Whether or not you want to admit it or not, the number of people who are highly motivated by graphics is quite small and the number of companies marketing to them is quite large; currently (as always) the PC is the most powerful system on the market and it will increase its dominance through out the generation, the XBox 360 was the most powerful system on the market for a year, and the XBox (or Gamecube) was the most powerful console for a geration yet none of these systems has the same level of success as the less powerful PS2 and Wii have had.

Certainly, the variety of software available has the biggest impact and (unlike the Gamecube or N64) Nintendo has not been having difficulty gaining a diverse selection of games for the Wii; by the end of the year they will have some very good exclusive games that cover (pretty much) every genre in the market.

Believe (if you want) that the 14 to 16 Million unit lead the Wii willl have by the end of this year will be meaningless, but don't be surprised if by the end of 2008 most of the major titles you anticipated being released for the PS3 are announced for other platforms.
