Forums - Gaming Discussion - Savour the Wii U and Vita - they're our new Dreamcasts

The Dreamcast was a nice console, but I do think it's a bit overrated. The Genesis is still the best Sega console by far.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Well dreamcast I can only really remember shenmue, crazy taxi and hotd 2 as really standing out.

For me the classic underdog will always be N64 what a console that was.

Dreamcasts problem was ps2's dvd player and I believe the success of gta 3 on ps2 plus competition from sony, nintendo and ms. Funnily enough the only console i didnt own from that gen was gamecube and that was because of windwakers graphics style so im still to play windwaker

Wii U sales seem to be down. The problem is radically outdated hardware.

2001
2.6 GB/s - Gamecube
6.4 GB/s - Xbox
3.2 GB/s - Playstation 2

2006
3.9 GB/s - Gamecube 1.5 (Wii)
22.4 GB/s - Xbox 2
51.2 GB/s - Playstation 3

2013
12.8 GB/s - Gamecube 2 (Wii U)
68 GB/s - Xbox 3
176 GB/s - Playstation 4

That's too weak. It should be at least 100 GB/s. The difference is astronomical - Playstation 4 has 13.75 times the memory. It's an inferior product - thus - it sells bad.

Vita will probably be Sony's last handheld yes. But unlike Dreamcast it's here to stay. Japanese devs can make an infinity of otaku games and the market will always be here to respond. In addition, they now have a good foothold in western markets. And let's not forget that Vita currently has more 3rd party support than 3DS in Japan.

I'm going to disagree. The Dreamcast had a huge library of fun and unique games. By 2000 it had so many awesome titles such as Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Sega GT, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Soul Calibur, Quake 3, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and that's not even including the niche games like Ikaruga, Rez, Bangai O, Power Stone, Ooga Booga, MDK2, Seaman, Samba De Amigo, MArs Matrix, ChuChu Rocket, EGG, then it had awesome multiplats like Tony Hawk 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Test Drive, Rayman 2, Legacy of Kain, Grandia II, Hydro Thunder, Rush 2049, etc. etc.

The Dreamcast was super unique and tried to do so many new and cool things. For example, online. Nintendo still hasn't embraced online yet Sega was pushing for it in 99. Seaman, Space Channel, and Samba De Amigo were also unique. Then you have the VMU, their camera, microphone, etc. etc.

The Dreamcast is a one of a kind console. The Wii U is OK I guess, but not even NEAR the Dreamcast.

I bought a Wii U to enjoy something new and different and I am enjoying it every day. I can't say that I don't care about the bussiness and haters but I do not want to miss any experience I have with the Wii U.

Now the fanboys will say the Vita, the Wii U, the Dreamcast,... is better than the others but that does not matter. Let's enjoy the games. I can not imagine that somebody has so much fun with this 'omg my console is so much better because...'-discussions.

I don't hate Microsoft, I don't hate PC,
I don't prefer Sony, I don't prefer Nintendo.
...Ok, I love Nintendo but this is something about tolerance, ok?

I'm a gamer with one of the greatest hobbies and I want to share this greatness with everyone.

Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2.

I would say the Wii U is aiming to be a gamecube (mind you thats a good thing for me). The Vita im not sure what to call. Its not a game gear...

The dreamcast was a different kind of console. It had plenty of good games and it was a good system. The problem with the Wii U and Vita is a bit different in wich they dont have the same ammount of inflow of games the DC had.
Different times though.

I wish they had as many awesome games as the Dreamcast did in its first year.

It wasn't until this post that I realised the similarities of WiiU & Dreamcast both trying to get the drop on the other consoles by releasing early.

I don't think either the Vita or WiiU will be discontinued early like the Dreamcast was (although actually, Vita is just about drawing up to the time DC was discontinued - ~ 2 years 4 months after release, eep) but we're definitely seeing similar sales patterns and trampling by the competition.

I love my Vita. And I'm sure I'll love my WiiU when I get around to being able to afford one.
