To be fair to other fighters, Brawl fed on the Wii craze, plus it's a more casual fighter than the rest of the bestselling fighting games, and casual games typically appeal to a wider audience. Still quite impressive though.

casual? its the most indepth fighter around...

Having not played Brawl, I can't really speak about it, but I did play both the original SSB and Melee. Super Smash Bros. is in-depth in terms of the variety of characters and their movesets, but it's not complicated or technical imo. It has the lowest learning curve of any fighter I've ever played, which is why it appeals to casuals, that plus the slew of Nintendo characters of course, which are quite popular with both younger gamers and older gamers who grew up around Nintendo, unlike most fighters which are mainly popular amongst older gamers.

@bolded remembering some combo's and blocking and countering has a learning curve?

a normal player isn't gonna beat a more skilled player just as any other fighter.

I could never get into Smash, but then again I never tried that hard. Love me some Street Fighter but I get destroyed when playing online.

People keep claiming that there is depth in Smash Bros. Can someone please explain to me where the depth is because it seemed pretty simplistic to me? I'm not trolling I'm being serious because I have a Wii U and would love a great fighter to go with it.

Wow, that's crazy.

the only difference from most fighters is that there aren't those long combo's which aren't creating depth if we're being honest here, yes the combo's are cool but creating a learning curve? no

smash has shields, sidestepping, dodging, catching weapons, timing, cliffhanging, weapons which increase intensity

Wow, I didn't know Tekken was such a large series. I thought Street Fighter was bigger.

Street Fighter 2 is best selling fighter if you include all the revisions and ports 15 million with Street Fighter II: The World Warrior being the best selling version of that game at 6.3 million.

Edit: and it seems Tbone made an error with those numbers with Melee selling around 7.07 million

It is very hard to explain, you kinda need to get into competitive smash to understand the depth

Melee was the most technical with Lag cancelling, wave dashing etc.

But in general Smash bros has many nuances that create depth similar to many fighters out there - spacing, frame counting, hit boxes, edge guarding, stage advantages, matchups etc.

I think what sets smash bros apart is that each character has their own unique techniques and strategies

Watch this, it might be a good example

For one reason or another, I never considered the smash series a fighting game. but if I must, I'd have to say it's my favorite fighting series ever. I bought a wii specifically for brawl.

As for the new one for the wii u, only time will tell with that but as of now I have no plans in getting a wii u just for that, maybe when a severe price cut happens.
