Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Made The Biggest Leap of The Big Three With Wii U

so I sat through a 3 minute video with no examples or actual arguments whatsoever...

The leap from Killzone 3, PS3's technical pick, to Shadow Fall for the PS4, is bigger than anything I have seen so far for the WiiU.

If I understand correctly, this is Killzone 3?

and this is Killzone Shadowfall?

So for Wii U, we have this:

Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)

"X" (Wii U):

I couldn't find a good screenshot for "X" so it looks worse than it's supposed to.

I kept waiting for there to be a point...but it never came. Why does this matter? I want my three minutes back.

im not gonna play "find the better screenshot" and with Shadow Fall you know it's not hard.

but next time try comparing released games and not target renders.

Graphically it's a bigger leap over Wii than PS4/Xbone are over PS3/360, yes.

And they're still behind the Xbox 360 in most areas.

Such as?

Indie games, Live event player, cross game chat, demos for every indie/arcade game, built in memory, requesting friends to play a game, playing movies/music from an HDD or PC, sharing games with multiple consoles, Smart Glass, analog triggers, achievements, download speeds, 3rd pary support, voice commands--pretty much every area except graphics (though Wii U is more powerful, there are Xbox 360 games that still look better than Wii U's best imo) and touch screen/off TV Play.

Wow, 360 > wii u

I found good screens for both games.  The Shadowfall screen was a good comparison to the KZ 3 one.

If anything, the Xenoblade vs X screens were unfair to X given that it's not released so all screens are from streamed videos on youtube/live players.

If we want to compare released games, there aren't too many of them to compare that would make any sense.  The best one available would be Mario Galaxy vs Super Mario 3D World.  Problem with that is that Super Mario 3D World does nothing to utilize the Wii U's power (it runs 60fps without ever dropping below, AKA locked at 60fps).

Wind Waker HD is also a bad example given it is an HD remastering of a Gamecube game, so there wont be any direct comparisons to be made.

Then Pikmin 3 is harder to say.  Pikmin isn't exactly demanding games either.

2D Mario games are 2D, there's a limit on how good you can make those look.

edit: I actually forgot about Donkey Kong Country.  The Wii DKC Returns actually did push the Wii to its limits.  Compare that to DKC Tropical Freeze.  Big difference.  Most likely Tropical Freeze doesn't push the Wii U anywhere near as much as DKC Returns did for Wii.

The finish line is when all three manufacturers quit selling that generation of consoles.  Just because another gen started, it doesn't mean the last gen is over.

Multiple generations exist and overlap.  Someone forgot to send you the memo. Sorry.

No. It's the 8th gen now. The 7th is over.

Maybe for you, but out of the 260,000,000 consoles sold in the 7th gen, only 15,000,000 have been replaced with next gen consoles.  So you could say that 245,000,000 gamers do not agree that the 7th gen is over.

But Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo agree that it's the 8th gen now, and they are ones who decide by releasing next gen systems.

From a corporation resources perspective the corporations are moving their resources to the 8th generation. Yes, that is true.

But, from a consumer perspective there is still significant demand for 7th generation consoles.  So, consumers have not ended the 7th generation.

10 years from now when people talk about sales of 7th generation consoles they aren't going to use the sales figures up to last December for the Wii, and this November for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.  They will look at the total sales up until the console manufacturers stopped shipping them to retail.  That won't be for another 3-5 years probably for PS3 and 360.

Look at PlayStation 2 sales.  All sources who talk about PS2 sales talk about how it sold 150,000,000+ units.  Well that didn't happen until well after the PS3 was released.  Sony announced 150 million on February 14, 2011... http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/110214_e.html...  So, even the manufacturers of the consoles continue to count sales of the previous generation after a new generation is released.

VGChartz platform totals numbers point to the fact generations are not considered over until the devices aren't being manufactured anymore...  http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/.  Again showing PS2 over 150 million units even though that happened a full 5 years after PS3 was released.  In fact, VGC still tracks new Wii, PS3, and X360 sales for some mysterious reason.  If your logic was sound then why are they still showing the Wii, PS3, and 360 total numbers growing?

And do a search on google for "150 million PS2" and you will find a variety of reputable sites that support the 150+ million number as being accurate for PS2 sales.

I challenge you to find a single news source since February 14, 2011 that uses PS2 sales numbers as of November 2006 as total sales for the 6th generation sales.

I would argue that we would, either way, see diminishing returns.  It's just that the "diminishing" part isn't as big as the picture makes it seem.

Definitely, but the picture shows that we are still far away from getting a no return point. It is all subjective anyway, for me the little details and touches are very important. I notice and examine every little  detail in games, some people just don't care.
