Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata: "The Wii U isn't in good shape"

I'm glad he's acknowledging the issue. Personally, even though I have and enjoy a Wii U, I wouldn't mind them replacing it in the relative near future with something kick-ass. When X, Kart and Zelda come, I'll have had plenty of good times with the system with Mario 3D and WWHD, not to mention money saved on online fees while playing COD. If a system were to launch in 2015 or 16 it would give me something to consider instead of a PS4, XBOne or new PC... I've already resigned that Wii U won't have many of the games coming to those platforms so another option is inevitible.

By big fear is that rather than going more core and competing with MS and Sony for my dollars, they instead go full casual with some sort of app-focused Nintendo-only product.

This.

I don't get why people are so obsessed with this. It's not like he can just announce something and everything will be fixed for Nintendo. Its a long drawn out process that can only go quickly if Nintendo decide to adhere to the market trends closely which destroys their fanbase. If he announces games now, it'll bring hope but unless they come out at a regular pace and within a year of their announcement. No game save the best game ever could get people to buy enough Wii u's to save it. Price drops won't fix a thing and meeting the small complaints of the current owners isn't going to sell much more consoles.

because they work in nintendo and know that HE is not doing any actions :)

and running a multi billion dollar business is like running a high school play rehearsal.... if something is wrong... you can fix it right away.

This is quite candid of Iwata...
I'm skeptical...
I hope he really said this, and I hope was see real, positive change...
It would be grand if they would deviate from what has become predictable...
As excited as I am for upcoming Nintendo games, there's no denying that they could e doing much cooler things...

Have a nice day...

Wow.. one statement from Neogaf and its not only taken as fact, but people are already spinning this in every possible way they can. Oh well keep spinning it into whatever you want. At the end of the day its meaningless.

It's from Bloomberg (the business site) actually. Just linked to Neogaf because it streamlines the article nicely.

Does anyone else feel they may just go Dreamcast on this thing? I suspect they will drop it completely by next year if whatever emergency strategy doesn't work out for them this year.

The first step to taking action is admiting action needs to be taken.

Sounds to me as if they are planning to ditch the wii u... in which case... I rather not spell the catastrophe that will be, but it may be their only option.
They can say goodbye to their credibility and probably their role as a hw maker. It may be the best time to sell my Wii U now

Well I think Zelda U, Yarn Yoshi, Bayonetta 2, Animal Crossing U, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. U, Mario Party U, Hyrule Warriors, SMT x Fire Emblem, etc. are all still coming to Wii U, which should take them through much of 2015 at least.

So I wouldn't throw out the console just yet.

My guess would be that games that Nintendo was thinking about greenlighting for the Wii U for 2016 and beyond however are quietly being pulled though.

Could be.  A 4 year console life (through 2016 with a final trickle of games) would be short, but something they could overcome.

They could then release a new more powerful system without any controller (or a pro controller), allowing you to use your wii motes and tablet from the old systems.  And if you never bought said system, sold seperately.

Dreamcast is a poor comparisson as they will surely have another system.  You could say they will go Saturn on it, but I think it would be more accurate to say they will XBox it.  I do think they are considering replacing it with a more desireable product, and sooner than one would usually expect.  The new product could come 4 years after launch or even 3.

The bottom line is, Iwata is a great guy, so is Miyamoto. They are both responsible for developing some of the best games ever made. Neither of them are a "problem". The PROBLEM, is that they need to structure themselves better, hire more development staff, work with more outside studios, and get more content to gamers. THAT is the problem, and that is the only thing that will fix it: More Games. Period.
