Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should I get into World of Warcraft

Short update: Today I've been resisting the temptation to go back to WoW and complete more quests. The temptation is strong. So far so good, but I'm not sure I will be able to resist all day, let alone all week. Will keep you posted.

Pretty cool, I had a friend who played on a certain night of the week for a set period of time, worked a cool job so the 12euros a month meant nothing and since he set aside those exact hours it meant that his time online was not spent faffing about but all directly towards a goal of 1 thing or another.

Glad you enjoyed your first 6 hours btw, really can be a great game to just wrap yourself up in.

It's complete and utter escapism. A time sink. You will spend hours/days/months even years staring at a monitor ignoring everything else around you. It's designed to pull you in, light up the brains reward centers endlessly (new levels, gear, areas, spells etc.) encourages you to join in with other players and start interacting with them on a daily basis (online friends, guilds) and always after you complete one task, to have another tantalizing goal just on the horizon. It's remarkable how well it can hook people.

Like others have mentioned, there are plenty of cautionary tales. I played for about 2 and a half years, everything suffered as a result. My online character was growing and becoming really strong while in real life I had stopped working out, wasn't going out with friends as often and my grades in college were dreadful. It didn't help that I got 3 other friends to pick up the game too, so there was always a friend online. I think all of us got out a couple of years back after maxing out characters, but it was like a drug in the heyday, 9 hours of play a day wasn't unreasonable.

So far I'm clear. Spent the day working on my projects and did not touch world. Heading to read a bit then off to bed.

1 - you are getting really fleeced on the cost of game time.

2 - free to play games are not free, you always pay. Games don't run on nothing.

3 -  Try the shift key rather than the caps lock key.

League of Legends?

League is actually a free game where you can get everything with just time instead of money (with the exception of character skins) But yeah I can happily conceed that because of leagues massive playerbase and community who are happy to support riot because of how good their game is. The whole of the game is available for free.

It's not an MMO tho, my point was slightly more towards the MMO free to play games, I should have clarified.

No, I think WoW lost its charm many years ago and it just doesn't feel fresh anymore... I think FFXIV RRB or Guildwars 2 is a much better choice than WoW but WoW does have a free to play till level 20 I believe (correct me if I am wrong)

Both are crap.
Guild Wars 2 has pretty much no Endgame or raiding content.
FFXIV is still not finished and needs time to get where it should be.At least it won't go F2P and turn into shit cause it can survive

Excuse me for butting in. What MMORPG is ever finished? FFXIV:ARR is about 4 months old and already being praised as best MMORPG of 2013, and its only getting better with patches every 3 months. They promise full expansions every year. So that is my point, no MMORPGs is ever finished dude.

Fast-forward 10 years later

A few months ago my brother was at my house praising the merits of all the things he learned while playing high-level aspects of world of warcraft, and all the leadership and team-playing skills he developed through the game, and how epic the game gets at high levels. Note: he also stopped playing video games when he got engaged about 5 years ago.

The past few years was a time for me to get back in touch with video games.

The question I have for you is, I am tempted to try it out, and I was wondering:

  • Is it too late
  • Is it too addictive and a bad idea
  • Is the game as interesting today or has the epicness faded
  • am I missing anything.
Thanks for helping me choose.

Don't play this game.

"All the things he learned" It's called retrospective reasoning. He knows he wasted his life on a useless game, he doesn't want to regret it so much so he makes up his mind in the positive aspects of this experience. Like saying abusing drugs was finally a good thing because you saw the real stuff of real life and learned a lot. Also note that your brother stopped playing this game (any game apparently) now. Like when you stop smoking or using drugs, you wouldn't want to do it anymore.

"Is it too addictive and a bad idea" Exactly that. Don't waste years of your precious live grinding hundreds (or more) of hours on this addictive game.

You could not say you didn't know.

Probably full of life.

A majoirty of servers were merged (with connected realms).

I've never seen trade chat + AH so active these last couple months.

I'm US Dark Iron but we merged with Coilfang, Demon Soul, and Dalevengyr.
