Forums - Politics Discussion - Racism in hollywood - iranian actress fed up of playing roles in terrorism storylines

Its great that she has the right to feel this way, if she was in Iran and complained, the only thing she would feel is the back of her husbands hand. lol

Let's be honest we would all bow down to the power of money. Money gets you girls and videogames. I never met any friend who can do that.

Money and I are Bros 4 life!

Well it's like I always say.

"Money can't buy you happiness... but a lack of money can make you fucking depressed pretty quick."

More or less. The living wage (or ability to leech off someone making a living wage) is the basic prereq for emotional stability.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

There's two sides to this Hollywood "racial" story. From another point of view, Hollywood is getting better. It's becoming much more international of a business. Especially for those who work behind the camera.

As a person who is half white..I am fed up of how people of different races are only getting roles of their stereotype. For example if you were to see a hollywood highschool movie you would imagine that majority of the people going to highschool in North America would be white (and that too by a large margin). However in almost any highscool in a suburban area you would see that there are just as many black, asian, brown students as there are white. Contrary to what films such as American pie, Superbad, 21 jumpstreet, and almost every highschool movie you have ever seen has told you. There are tons of actors who are out there who have the looks and the talent to be a major hollywood actor but most are denied due to their race.

That being said Hollywood has come a long way to including actors of different races in hollywood movies. The 70's to 90's being dominated by movies with Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Bruce lee, Ben Kingsly etc. And now movies such as Slumdog millionaire and Life of Pi putting on a good show at the oscars and the box office. Also many blacks and Latino's being the highest paid actors and actresses.

Still when it comes to non white actors hollywood has been a let down most of the time not giving roles to actors that are mostly brown and asian and making you believe that they look like this:

When infact mainstream bollywood stars look far better than Hollywood stars. For example:

If their casting for middle eastern terrorist then it makes sense to get middle eastern people to play the roles.

I think the problem isn't so much that they're casting middle eastern terrorists so much as it is they aren't casting middle east anything else.

Every female lead in a love story is going to be a white woman,(or someone who passes) unless it's specfically targeting the black market.

or if the lead man is asian...

Talk about stereotyping! People need to realise you get non-Muslim "terrorists" too. Just look at the US government.

Considering the fact that Obama has a 100% muslim Name(Hussein)+a Name that is used by jews and muslims(barak)

the paradoxy is impossible to top ("you get non muslims too" in combination with a barak hussein bomb picture confirmed the muslim-bombing stereotype 100% while trying to achieve the opposite.

this two posts made me laugh a lot.

There's other film options out there outside of Hollywood. She can either make more money being typecast in Hollywood, or have a more diverse career doing indie films, at the cost of making less money. You can't have it all, and Tinsel Town won't change its ways.

I agree with this. Typical hollywood movies aren't about Iranians. It wouldn't make sense to cast her as an American. It sucks for her, but that's how it is.

Some of the comments in this read are really sad. How is anything supposed to change if people like this actress don't complain about it? It IS a problem because it's reinforcing negative stereotypes. It also lays a blanket stereotype on all people who "look" Arab when most of them have nothing to do with terrorism.

The whole "Its a business" argument is the same bull that game companies shove down our throats to convince us that they can only make COD clones. Hollywood doesn't have to slavishly commit to trying to cater to what they think the public wants. This risk averse mentality is why we get mostly derivative tripe from hollywood and the game industry these days.
