Forums - Gaming Discussion - So I went to Best Buy yesterday....

I guess Microsoft overstocked the US because meanwhile in Canada they're pretty much sold out everywhere.

And EBgames are also out of stock or low in stock (verified Montreal, Toronto, and my hometown)

That's Best Buy's problem. If they hid those 50 Xbones in the back, people would think they are in high demand too and want to buy one. Create some demand by not showing. People ain't going to buy an Xbone any time soon if they see that. They can get one any time they want.

That's stupid if people actually think that way.

Explain. Tell me how anyone would want to buy an Xbone if they saw that stack. If there was one or two consoles on the shelf, I would be more inclined to want to snag one up, before they sell out. I wouldn't know there are 100 or so in the back.

So when you see two washing machines in a store, you snag one up because they could sell out??? I can't quite follow your logic here..

If someone was looking for an washing machine and it fit what they wanted out of it, then fuck yes. I've actually shopped around for washing machines before and they go out of stock quick because they carry low quantities of each model. Supply can create demand.

You guys aren't accounting for spur of the moment shoppers. People who don't come in there with an agenda to buy right away. But of course everything is stupid, if it doesn't follow your own way of thinking or logic.

I'm always a spur of the moment shopper when it comes to best buy. I go there all the dam time and most of the time I don't buy stuff, but sometimes I do,with no rythme are reason.

With a washing machine, there won't be this much hype but in a similar way the sales guy might tell you one was selling like hotcakes, recommend it and tell you they migh not be in stock long.  That does sway people, all other things being equal.

With consoles, if you are aware that one of them is selling out and you see it on the shelf you're more likely to pull the trigger.  If you see 50 on the shelf, you might think there's no rush to buy, or wait for the one that's sold out (which seems more popular).

more supply will come eventually. that's my mindset.

When it comes to hardwre, once I'm interested I tend to buy as early as I can, because I don't expect the price to change soon and I figure the sooner I buy it the more time I'll have to enjoy it.

With software I used to have the same mindset, but it led to having a big backlog of unplayed games - so now my mindset is to play my backlog and buy new titles later, sometimes for less $$ than on day one.

Consumers know the relative availability of the XB1 to the PS4; most people aren't that ignorant these days when all you have to know how to do is type and use a web browser to see what's up.

As for my own anecdotal account, I still haven't seen a PS4 at retail on shelves. The last three times I went shopping for groceries or sundries I could have picked up an XB1.

I saw a bunch of ps4 at my local best buy stacked up like that also, so what's the point?

Photo or it didn't happen.

Was there maybe a Wii U display in front of those Xboxes that you had to remove to take that picture?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

The problem is your logic assumes that there is this critical mass of "impulse" buyers when there is not. Sure you might find a few here or there but at $400-500 the amount of impulse buying too limited for that type of sales tactic to work. Especially after a few months of being out on the open market.

Besides what would Best Buy have to gain by holding back PS4 units off the display floor over the XB1? Sony paying off Best Buy?
