Forums - Nintendo Discussion - If you were President of Nintendo, what would you do?

Go third party fast and hard while still supporting the 3DS and WiiU for a while for a nice smooth transition.

Nintendo makes great games that are reason enough for people to buy their OK consoles. But not enough anymore and even less in the future.

Xbox One, PS4, Vita, PC, Tablets, phones and everything else will give Nintendo games the sale they deserve.

Your argument totally fell apart when you got to Vita. That platform bombed, and has no future.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Release some damn games, even Gamecube hade three times as many games released in the same period as Wii-U hade in the past half year.

I would wave my magic wand and complete all games and then release them like a lot of people think will happen if Iwata was replaced

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Lol this is like the 3rd or 4th thread asking the same thing that i've seen in the chartz lately, why does everyone want to run Nintendo lol

haven't you heard that forum dwellers can run a multibillion dollar company better than Iwata. Please understand

I would hire more people to make games.

I would let people do their own IP/thing when they are idle or 50/50 new/old IP.

Would give every Nintendo employe a sytem for free so they can showcase it to their friends.

Would rename WiiU or would simply add a 2 inside the U and use the U as the LOGO. (drop Wii from the LOGO)

Would bundle a showcase title like Wario or Nintendland with every WiiU as a download (does cost 2 cents in traffic)

Would replace the shitty battery with the better on in every WiiU controller.

Would stop focusing on mainstream audience that actually destroyed the gaming industry with PS360 and would stop streamlining my games (Metroid Prime 2, Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy 2) for people that have a short attention span and slow comprehension.

Would make a new kind of NINTENDO SEAL OF QUALITY.
To avoid shovelware and force third party to actually care about their products.

Force them to drop SHORT TERM PROFIT mentality.

Force them to drop the "bad sales during first 3 months = failure = price drop that devalues the games" mentality.

Force everyone to make "buy game during first 6 months and you get every DLC for free!" a standard instead of
"pay extra to have a season pass that does not even include everything". Also prevends companies from selling unfinished games.

Force companies to implement the option for user hosted servers OR they are never allowed to drop support for their own dev/pub hosted official servers. So they cant force customers to move on to the next game because they closed the servers on purpose.

Force them to drop the "you have exactly 12 months to make that game not a single day more" mentality. Let the games take the time they need to become good.

I would make my NES/GB catalog FREE for WiiU and 3DS users and let the games sell on iOS for 2-4 dollars depending on the game (Links Awakening = 4dollars)

Would start selling my blockbuster games for 30 instead of 60 because there is actually no reason to sell games for 60. Blurays sell for 5-10 even tho most movies are more expensive to make than games because there is more people into movies thanks to the low price.

Would make "buy game on WiiU get it on 3DS for free" (not vice versa so people care more about WiiU! And WiiU owners actually get a reward for owning the system)

P.S.  the stuff that "forces" thiry party to do things is GOOD for customers. Every company that does not do it  is automatically a BAD company.  You know like there is this statistics thing made by greenpeace? about how much waste is produces at company XY and if a company does not reply or scores BAD they are automatically listed as bad for the environment?  Something like that.
So if third parties dont want to offer value to their customers by accepting these rules they have no right to make games.

From the other thread just like this one, because today I have work to do:

TheLastStarFighter 23 hours ago
This is just a regular day for me since my girlfriend won't have sex with me unless I wear my Iwata mask. So, today I:

- Purchase a controlling stake in Capcom and Square Enix using about 3 billion US$ of the current cash reserves. They are left largely independent and with their own separate identity, but are streamlined and now make only games for Nintendo platforms. FFXV becomes a 2015 Wii U exclusive, Deep Down and RE7 will be highlights of fall 2014. DQXI will be a highlight for 3DS. Mistwalker is hired to lead FFXVI, which will be for the next Nintendo home console. Eidos Montreal and IO are tasked with creating new western ip's in the 1st/3rd person shooter genres. Crystal Dynamics keeps working on Tomb Raider, but Laura gets her big boobs back. DMC gets outsourced to Platinum, while Keiji Inafune is allowed to make Mighty no 9 into a new Mega Man as long as it becomes exclusive to Nintendo platforms with Capcom getting publishing rights.

-Platinum is also given Star Fox to have some fun with.

- A new Nintendo Android Tablet (iPad mini size) is developed for fall 2015. It will be of high quality with specs similar to Wii U. It will have most Android apps available, as well as unique Nintendo apps and much Wii U software will be ported for download or sold on flash memory card. It has physical controls and will be usable with Wii U and a future Nintendo console. It will launch with Mario3DWorld, MK8 and ZeldaU ported, and with a couple unique titles. Priced at $299 with a subscription service to allow for download of free games and online matchmaking at around $29/year. The look and name will be all-new branding, with a very mature look.

-Wii U is re-designed for fall 2014 with a smaller gamepad and a look that matches the upcoming tablet, much how DSLite foreshadowed the look of Wii. The system will continue to be supported with resources gradually moving from 3DS to support Wii U and the Nablet as a unified platform. Games will be released on both through 2016, eventually going Nablet-only. Focus for 2014 is the core gamer with X given AAA promotion status.

-Retro is expanded to develop the next Zelda and a new game set in the metroid universe. The Zelda Retro team is supported by former members of the Zelda EAD team, and some second party studios including possibly Rocksteady which is part-owned by Square-Enix. They are also asked to support the Metroid title, which will have a new look for Samus, mulitplayer and a fresh feel. Zelda will be a completely fresh take on the series. Both games are planned for the next-gen home console.

-The NSMB and Wii- teams are re-organized to develop smaller, cheaper, quick-play titles for Wii U and Nablet. They will be unique ideas or re-imagining of classic titles like Mario Bros, Donkey Kong or Bubble Bobble that are well-suited to Tablet/mobile play or for a nights entertainment. They will be low-cost downloads or free with the subscription service.

-The former Zelda team is reduced (after Zelda U) and given the goal of an all-new adventure title for Wii U and Nablet. It could have some of the spirit of Wind Waker, with the weird characters Eiji Aonuma is known for and a unique art style. But it won't be Zelda and will have unique mechanics, possibly with a touch-screen focus. Aonuma will have freedom without having to please Zelda traditionalists, who will be pleased by Retro's back-to-basics approach.

-EAD Tokyo is assigned a ground breaking Mario title for Next Gen, with the guideline that it must have classic gameplay like SM3DW but an all-new theme (like SMG did) and ground-breaking graphics.

-A new studio is formed in the UK hiring former Rare staff (many are already working on Wii U) who are given free reign to make unique products.

-Shin'en is partnered with to make a next-gen F-Zero.

-A powerful next gen system is developed for launch in fall 2016. It will be 2-4X the power of PS4, use flash cards instead of disks and have a versitile OS that works with the Nablet for unique game experiences. The base controller itself will be a basic dual-analogue Wii Remote hybrid. It will have new branding and style to match the Nablet. The subscription service and online services will be shared with the two devices. Target price of $399. Launch titles include Mario Universe (3D), Final Fantasy XVI by Mistwalker/Square and F-Zero Neo. A high-end 1st person shooter by IO or Eidos Montreal should also be ready for launch, while the new Metroid Universe game would follow in winter along with next gen titles such as a new Left 4 Dead, with Zelda by Retro ready to launch a new Zelda trilogy in Fall 2017.

-Overall, with the much larger resources allowed by the acquisition of Square and Capcom, significant internal Nintendo resources are devoted to smaller download games and the development of better OS and online infrastructure for the new Nablet and home console, and to a lesser extent Wii U. Mario-branded games are reduced, and limited to major release titles such as 3D Mario and MarioKart, and some fun classic style 2D download games. The power and style (and promotion) of the new systems, along with key exclusives in series with passionate fans (Mario, Zelda, Kart, Final Fantasy, RE) should lead to high adoption rates with diverse interests and thus 3rd parties would be forced/motivated to release content on the systems. Capcom and Square would focus on key AAA content while Nintendo's internal teams would produce key AAA system movers and lighter fair for the casual audience, and ensuring that the hardware has everything a prospective owner would want. Retro and Monolith would be treated much as the second parties, given mostly free reign to produce high-end core AAA titles in the action, adventure and RPG genres.
Long post, but it's a good morning to sip tea and day dream.

Nintendo makes great games that are reason enough for people to buy their OK consoles. But not enough anymore and even less in the future.

Xbox One, PS4, Vita, PC, Tablets, phones and everything else will give Nintendo games the sale they deserve.

Even if game sales tripled, they would still lose money doing that.

(Replace tripled with whatever you want. I'm not doing the math, but it might be around there)

And how do you figure that?

Besides Nintendo's downhill trajectory gives them a whole lot more to lose than going third party would.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=176458&page=1

From that thread:

In terms of their business, Nintendo is primarily a hardware maker.  Yes, they spend a lot of resources making games, and they are the biggest software maker in the industry.  But they are also the biggest hardware maker, and it is where most of their income comes from.  If we use the Wii as an example, we will get the following chart:

Hardware Total Profit per unit Total
100.95 $49 $4,946,550,000
Total Software Royalty per unit Total
913.5 $7 $6,394,500,000
Total income from hardware business: $11,341,050,000
Nintendo Software Publisher share Total
312.84 $27 $8,446,680,000

Note that their are a few assumptions made, first of all that the profit per Wii was/is $49.  It was reported that Nintendo was making $13 in Japan, $49 in the US and $79 in Europe per Wii soon after launch. That may not be totally accurate, but it's a good estimate.  Secondly, prices on both software and hardware get reduced over time... but the relative dollars should be at least somewhat consistant, and costs go down too.

But as you can see, in that chart 57% of Nintendo's business is the hardware side.  The company themselves say it's about 65%.  Further, the royalty revenue from software costs Nintendo virtually NOTHING, unlike the actual development of first party software.  About 30% of their revenue simply comes from existing in the hardware sector.

Nintendo will never become a software-only company if they can avoid it.  They will only do so if their hardware begins to mount massive year over year losses.  Since the 80's they have been build on royalties as a business and will continue to be.  Even if Wii U is a complete failure they will try again, simply because the royalty revenue business is too lucrative.  And this is even before considering factors such as their own software getting a boost by being the "flagship" titles for the system, and other 1st party advantages.

You clearly don't understand where Nintendo makes their revenue.

Marketing/Retail/Advertising/Ancillary Sales
--------------------------------------------
Aggressively pursue new distribution channels. For example, have a Wii Fit U display in Bed Bath and Beyond. Or even PetSmart! WiiFitU has tracks pet activity too. Cool way to show off Cat Mario too.

Partner with McDonalds, Subway or other fast food chain for a Mario/MarioKart themed toy giveaway in happy meals

Form Nintendo "Street teams" that show off (and directly sell) Nintendo games and hardware in malls, festivals, trade shows.

License lesser-known and more 'mature' IPs for Graphic Novels. Namely
-Metroid
-Earthbound
-Starfox
-The wonderful 101

Create "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" type of ads. Troll XboxOne and PS4 for being consoles filled with angry, lonely, immature young men and position the WiiU as the console for happy, regular, normal people. You MUST do this in the next year before it's too late and these consoles gain mainstream acceptance.
Also position the WiiU as console that's best for spending time with your significant other (because it is).

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Nintendo expected to sell 9 million units this year, but sold less than 3 million. That means there are at least 6 million units on store shelves or in distribution centres somewhere. Nintendo has already paid for these units to be made and sustained the loss. Re-launch the Wii U later this year with a pro controller, and ditch the tablet. Set a lower price point (£130?) and sell the current surplus of 6 million off at that price point from April. People will snap them up before the tablet-less version launches, Wii U will have an install base of over 10 million and Nintendo will start to see a profit in the next fiscal year. Then, develop a console to replace the Wii U in a year or two, but a console the consumer actually wants. A power house with an established control method and no gimmicks.
