I think the wii could pull of alot of those but maybe not all at high res.

Like I said one or the other, but not both.

Honestly, they will get better results from putting in the time to develope the techniques properly...especially if they can re-use the engine in other projects. And as I said higher resolutions are overrated by graphics whores. Thats not to say they are useless but they are given far too much credit when its not deserved.

Here is a decent example:

Crysis Pic Low Res 1200x800

Crysis Pic High Res 2560x1600

Which one looks better? Which one looks more realistic?

To my eyes at least the first one looks more realistic but you can see more detail in the second one. Which is what I'm trying to illustrate. With a game like Crysis where the detail is being properly rendered you can get some gain out of stupid high resolutions like 2560x1600..but even on a modest resolution it still looks stunning. A sort of diminishing returns to be sure.

Now honestly I think if you showed the pictures to people on the street the higher res pic would more easily be identified as a rendered shot. Now why is that? The answer should be obvious that it is the high quality BM on the leaves (and to a lesser extent in this shot the trees) with amazing lighting and shading techniques that would ring true for most people.

To me, both shots look beautiful.  You're right that the hi res has more detail, but is it worth it?   The white guy with the bit of stubble on his face looks good, but the black guy seems to have the pox.  Or at best, you are looking at his face with a 100x powered microscope.

Where the low res pic fails (as such) is the extreme blurry-ness in the upper left hand corner and the same with the tree trunk that has fallen.  But the same is true in the hi rez shot as well, such as the face of the 3rd man.  Seems to me that both shots have a problem with where 'detail' blurs in the distance.  It doesn't at 10 feet, or even that much at 50 feet.  But this is a developer's issue, not the machines.

And like I said to being with, overall, both look very nice.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

There's a peripheral for the 360 that alledges to give the console HDMI support. It costs $80, and is supposed to be an option for early 360 owners. I wish there was some kind of enhancer for the Wii. I can ignore it, but the Wii is kinda blurry on my LCD tv.

I quoted this because of the only thing that 720p would have noticeable benefit. The "blurry" image comes from upscaling the picture. If you have a 720p TV, you get the best possible picture quality with 720p signal. According to Nintendo, 720p could be possible, although with lower framerate. And just as Kyros said, issue isn't the resolution, problem is with framerate. Textures can be compressed, which would free memory, but decompressing requires processing power, which could be taken from polygon production, so it's not exactly a win-win situation. Anyway, 720p would mean sharper picture with lower framerate.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I just think it's super cool to see HD possible on Wii.
And there are new rumors the Factor 5 game is going to be 720p! And Fctor 5 said something about the Wii: does everything the PS3 does plus a little bit more. Or something. Can't give you a source, sorry.

I read they plan to push the limits of the Wii regarding graphics. Factor 5 didn't said anything about 720. Actually, they said they are finished with their Wii engine and that it is doing everything the ps3 engine did. Isn't more likely he is talking about functionality instead of graphical prowess?

"That means if games start supporting these resolutions there is no need to buy ps3 and 360 for hd gaming."

Oh my god where do these guys come from? A PC from 1980 would have been able to support 1080p. (Perhaps he would have only painted one polygon per hour but who cares 1080p Woohooo)

When do you get it the resolution alone doesn't mean shit. Even the Ps3 and 360 which are 10times more powerful than the Wii mostly use 720p because the images they can compute for 720p look better than a potential 1080p game with fewer pixel-render operations.

If you want gorgeous HD graphics buy a 360 or a PS3, if you like the motion controls of the Wii buy a Wii but please think before you write.

I said there is no need to buy the ps3 and 360 just because they support hd (which alot of people with little knowlege of graphics do) if you could get it elsewhere. I didn't say anything about the other graphical capabilites.

@Everyone What did the ps2,xboc do to produce 720p and 1080i.  Do these games look crappy or good.

@souixan I agree with everthing except the wii being close in power to the xbox. The wii is far more efficient has alot more ram and the gamecube rivaled the xbox in graphics alot of the time so the wii is most likely 2 times more powerful than the xbox.

Everyone stop bagging on sc94597 on complaining about the wii graphics. The point of this isn't necessarily that the wii can do everything HD exactly like the ps3/360. The point is wondering if the wii can from a technical perspective do higher HD resolutions.

Yes even if the wii can do 720/1080p, it'll still have a difficult time being comparable, with all the other missing graphic features, that's not the point.

Obvious the fact that the xbox1 and ps2 was able to do some HD graphics indicate its possible, its just a matter of how much tradeoff it will take, if any.

This does bring up the point though about the video connection. Anyone know definitely how/if/what the wii is capable of outputting? Obviously HDMI is not required since the 360 didn't have one for a long time but what else might be needed that the wii doesn't have?

Arguably any machine can run HD graphics .Other thing is that those would/couls run at 8 fps on it .

Some Xbox and PS2 games offered HD graphics so its definitely possible .But with low graphical charge in any case .

@darconi Thank you ,I'm sure if a hd game came out nintendo would release a vga/hdmi cord. There are already third party vga cords. Can't component do 720p also. So if it is 720p there wouldn't be a need for new types of cords. I also agree that giving the wii hd graphics wouldn't be beneficial at first but then developers would take the wii seriously and know that the wii is a very capable system. Then we would see better looking games in 480 i , 480p and possibly higher. People on here think I care if the game was in hd or not when I don't. I'm only trying to prove how hd is beneficial and that the wii is capable of it. Thank you again darconi.

To be honest I couldn't care less if it offered HD resolutions. Why is everybody so obsessed with how many pixels there are on the screen?

To me graphically art style is more important and gameplay is more important than graphics in any case.

^ Neither do I like I said many times. This thread was just to point out that the wii could produce hd with the same graphics that it has in metroid imo without little or no drop in framerate. This thread is also suppose to explain how hd would be beneficial in other forms of graphics. This thread doesn't explain how hd would make the wiis graphics so much better.
