Is Donkey Kong really such a big deal for Nintendo? I mean yes I like the Donkey Kong games but going by the hype in this forum it seems to be almost savior like as a franchise. I always regarded Donkey Kong more like an add-on franchise to Mario but never really something big on its own. I guess I'll see when it comes out how big it really is.

No one game is going to be Wii U's savior, but DKC is still a major franchise. According to VGC, DKCR sold over six million copies (and counting), and in a sense, you could call it a bigger, more savior-like franchise than Zelda currently is.

So it's even bigger than Zelda? Didn't expect that. I'm being serious here since I've not been following Nintendo fandom for the past gen. I never thought of it as big because it is just another platformer.

I could however see the appeal in Metroid, Starfox and F-Zero because they are unique in their own way.

In a sense. There's no real scientific way to determine how large the Zelda fanbase is, or how effective a new Zelda game is at pushing hardware. But, going by sales, DKC has the apperance of being more relevant.

This game is gonna be freaking awesome. Can't wait for it. First I thought to myself 'ah just donkey kong', now I am like 'Gotta have this!'

As for sales, I think it's gonna push the Wii U to a certain extend. A little bit higher than the impact of Pikmin 3 maybe.
We're not talking about Mario or Zelda guys.

Absolutely. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Hell yes. Can't wait for this one. Returns was a pretty good game and Tropical Freeze seems to fix all the things that were wrong in Returns ( waggle, music,  the blow mechanic being gone) so it is a must buy for me.

it looks like a solid game that, if i owned a wiiU, i certainly would buy. however, as a non-wiiU owner it does very little to make me want to buy a wiiU. that's just how i feel.

Hm, what tosh aimed at Nintendo fans rather than reality.
When you have INDY games such as Trine, Braid, etc out there, this is still very basic, out dated gameplay. Also most people have never played the original Donkey Kongs now as they are so old, so going for the nostalgia market will be a certain fail.
So prediction; it will sell just like Zelda did. Mass load at start as a lot of folks with a Wii U will buy it, then nothing as it won't attract anyone to buy a Wii U.

Er, if I recall, Wii U sales went up when Wind Waker HD was released.

It generally sells as much or better than Zelda. The last Donkey Kong game sold 6 million units on Wii + 1 million on 3DS.

In the second half of the 90s it was probably the biggest Nintendo franchise along with Mario. People forget that because there were no Donkey Kong Country games for a decade after Microsoft bought Rare.

I think the difference is that people think there is a large Zelda fanbase, so Zelda is always guaranteed to sell a few millions, while Donkey Kong doesn't have hardcore fans as far as I know.
