Forums - Gaming Discussion - Paid Youtube Game Reviews

Given the recent news about Microsoft paying youtubers to promote the Xbox 1, we have to sit back and think.  Can youtube reviews really be trusted???

Clearly MS is tossing money everywhere to try to boost up the X1. So are they doing the same with game reviews?  Are we really suppose to believe that Gamespot/IGN/Machinama are giving honest reviews with no $$$ incentive. Yes Sony and Nintendo could be doing the same but MS has a big wallet and they seem to be slightly more unethical with all the xbox 1 flip flopping about policies etc.

Also with net neutrality gone now the internet will be another place controlled by the almighty dollar....sigh

Wow, you're like an anti-toastboy, just with more bias and less common sense.

Paid advertisement wasn't really invented yesterday you know?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Youve been on a role today. Maybe take a break and relax a little bit. Its a console, not the end of the world. Consoles play games and if youre really going to take these things this serious then you need to take a step back and remember what you buy consoles for.

So your saying it's pointless to watch game reviews then?

It's not pointless. That is if you don't buy into the "every review is paid" crap. Gaming journalism is not as rotten as some poeple like to think it is. Sure there are some bad examples here and there but that's not the norm. I follow a few gaming sites and I trust their reviews because I've read many of them to different games and agree with most of the stuff said. There are enough serious reviewers that will never stoop so low and will even call out any attempt made by a publisher to bribe them. That's why I believe most serious publishers don't bother to bribe a reviewer since it can massively backfire on them.

If I don't believe what a review says I will just read another one. I'm not really that dependant on reviews anyway since I only buy games that I will like guaranteed. I read them because it's nice to hear people agree with me :)

Why is it evil to pay for page views? I have posted up reviews using the built in video creation tool just because I love the game and many of my friends bought the games because of it but I never got paid. Would have been nice if I did! If Sony did the same then I bet the same people would rave and say they care so much about gamers.
