Squaresoft vs Square Enix

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Squaresoft vs Square Enix

Its true that they have made less appealing games than in the past but you have to remember, as the years go through - many changes occur, whether its leadership, structure or the individual teams who work on a particular series.

And with all changes come new direction. Who knows, maybe in a few years they'll have a different set of people and will have a different impact than in the last few years (hopefully not as bad :P).

I've personally enjoyed a handful of titles this past few years from SE such as KH BBS, FFVII Crisis Core, The Anniversary remakes of FFI, FFII and FFIV. I'm sure there are others (that I havent played yet) like TWEWY and Bravely Default.

XIII and XIII-2 were ok, not as solid as older FF games but not much of a disappointment for me at least.

My only complaint(s) other than the lack of number of titles opposed to previous gens is the developmental time (i.e. FFXV) and the decisions that they made on a few things (such as FFXI and FFXIV).

SQEX clearly cop more hate than they deserve.
I cant choose between the 2, the only thing Squaresoft have over SQEX imo is my fave game, FFX, otherwise its fairly even.

A lot of people try to blame the merge with Enix as what began the decline of Square's franchises. Truth is, Square started losing its touch about 14 years ago. Pretty much since the launch of the PlayStation 2. They tried to branch out into other genres they were not very familiar with like real world racing and wrestling. That didn't go over so well. Their games had already been going down slowly in average critical reception. By 2003, Square had become little more than a Final Fantasy machine. If it wasn't a new single-player Final Fantasy game it was a sequel, a spin-off, an online game, a port-over, or a remake. A non-Final Fantasy game had become increasingly rare.

FFXV is bad with its development time but the others really cant be helped. Games cant be churned out as quickly as they used to.

And FFXI?? Im confused, it made more money than any other game theyve published ever. FFXIV was innevitable afterwards, its just too bad it had a rocky start.

No no dont get me wrong, didnt mean FFXI and FFXIV were bad games or it wasnt worth it - I'm disappointed with the fact that they made two FF mainline FF games MMOs n__n.

Also ya like I said as years go by, changes in leadership and groups change unfortunately, hopefully the next couple of years will be different since I am sure they've learned from the mistakes in the last few years ;o.
