Sony must have shipped well over 4.4 million by 31/12/2013, they'd only need to average 1.35 million shipped across this year to meet the demand for 20 million sales and also make sure they have a surplus going into 2015, not that much more a month considering they were at 1 million a month by September, by the sounds of things yields actually increased beyond that by the end of 2013, because there were 4 months of production, so they must have averaged over 1.1 million to get those 4.4 million sales through to customers.
If they stayed at 1.1 million shipped a month, that would put them at 17.6 million by 31/12/2014, but I think they'd be in a similar position to last year, running out of stock by a big margin, they only need to up the average an extra 200k a month to hit 20 million produced, 1.35 each month, throughout this year would put them at 20.6M, so plenty to meet 20 million sales by the end of 2014.
Considering they have January sales coming up after Black Friday and Xmas Week, 2 major exclusives (The Order and Bloodborne) & a huge multiplat in Witcher 3 dropping in February, Ratchet & Clank between March and the end of June having a surplus of stock isn't a bad thing going into 2015
I would think Sony will want to get ahead on production as much as possible.
IMO meeting demand for 20 million sales by the end of the year isn't as hard as it may seem.
