Nintendo always starts working on their next console almost as soon as the last one comes out. That classic Nintendo level of polish doesn't come from nowhere.
1. Its normal to start the development of next system. I think sony and microsoft will start the development of their next gen very soon.
2. It will not be a handheld. We wont see another handheld in next 6-7 years.
My bet in on home console.
Of course they're working on new consoleS. That means that they're probably working on both the new handheld AND the next home console, but the handheld will of course be released first. I'd say that the next Nintendo portable will be announced in 2016 and released in 2017, when the next home console will be announced for a 2018 release.
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
Ah yes. NeoGAF, the source for all things completely legit and credible.
I call bullshit. 3DS is doing too well for them to be doing anything but perhaps R&Ding their next eventual handheld, and Wii U is barely a year old.
Nintendo smartphone confirmed?
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
Wouldn't surprise me. They started working on the 3DS and Wii U about 3-4 years before they launched, and the 3D launched in 2011, about 3 years ago. This would indicate that the successor would be out in 2016/2017, which sounds about right.

Pokemon X Y took 3 years to be made. So its wise trying to bring a pokemon title as a launch title. Nintendo take 1,5 years between announcment and actual release, so everything is possible. The building that would unify the internal nitenndo divisions is ready. Lets wait and see. |
That rumour is awesome, casually mentions Nintendo already has prototypes of their handheld/console hybrid. Wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of it come true, whether the source is credible or not. He does mention a major update today.
