Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Wants the Xbox One to Cater to a Broader Audience – Not Just Hardcore Gamers

Well it's mostly the hardcore gamer's that bring in the revenue especially for the Xbox division, I could understand wanting to cater to broader audiences like they said but i'm afraid Microsoft focused too much on the media aspect of the console and not enough on the gaming side, which for one is good for bringing in the casuals but it's not gonna be the casual's who are gonna be buying upwards of 5 games per year

Is this a surprise to anyone? All consoles are doing it more and more, since the PS2 was also a DVD player.  Xbox was also a DVD and media (music) player.

PS3 has blu-ray, streaming and other stuff. WiiU has TVii, etc.

It's like all smart phones are also watches, cameras, video recorders, wallets, etc. We are moving to fewer devices, but those devices will do many things.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

If Microsoft thinks television is going to expand the gaming market they've got another thing coming. They are aiming for a whole other generation. People under the age of 35 are straying so far away from TV that its not even funny. Sony and Nintendo need to be applauded for their contributions to expanding the gaming market naturally by using things people actually use. Microsoft doesn't have a clue. It seems like they are so desperate to own the living room that they want to force it onto people. As much as I love the Xbox One the Cable portion of it wont be its major selling point even though its useful.

I am going out on a limb here.  I don't think including TV on the Xbox One is designed to expand the gaming market.  It's to expand the versatility and usefulness of the console and help steer more people to use the console.  In the same way, having a HD Skype Machine with a noise reduction microphone array included in your console - when others are selling stand alones at $200 is quite practical and a nice feature.

I'm not following you on the 'force people to use it.'  It's an option.  Personally I'm cutting my cable - and made myself and little antennae.  But I can still get a channel list from Microsoft, which is a nice really thing to get.

What has Nintendo and Sony added that people use, that Microsoft hasn’t?  Not sure where you are going with that one.  Microsoft gives away Free Xbox SmartGlass, so you can use a phone/tablet you already own with their device.  (Not forcing you to buy a separate one.)  It’s added value to things you already have.

I get the cable features might not appeal to most people hear, but that doesn’t make them irrelevant to many others out there.

Microsofts contribution to the gaming industry was getting people to pay for online gaming because they were the first to properly establish it in the mass console market. They think they are expanding audiences by adding cable television, but they couldn't be any more wrong. As much as you're saying its an all in one thing, Microsoft wants to appeal to the average joe who sits at home and watches TV. Esseentially, this means they are looking for people over the age over 35 to use their console as a hub. Tough luck there. Not very smart (Especially at $500). As we've agreed upon, the addition is useful, but my feeling is that its not needed. When you down the rabbit hole, the whole purpose is to keep people paying for Xbox Live and giving them more incentive to do so over Sony. When you look at concrete reasoning in this dy and age, its not enough, when you're talking about a gaming console which by its value has a set market and with variables can cause the numbers of the generation to eithe rise or fall based on innovation. They were smart to take Sonys business model for PSN Plus and add it to Xbox Live because the gamers who have been funding Microsoft for god knows long deserve to get back for how much they have put into Xbox Live. When you look at things  that is the smartest way to go and with the cloud the sky is the limit for such a service. Think about it.

Wii U needs to do the exact opposite.

Ah, I see what you mean.  But I think it would be pushing more to Nintendo, as Sony is now charging for muliti play as well.  Plus, Sony just announced a new pay TV Cable type deal.  So they are moving more behind a paywall.

Nintendo, like a Roku, let's you add all the stuff and play for no additional charges.
