Both Apple and Nintendo have a business model where they don't make too many products, they focus on a few things at a time, and try to make an actual profit from their hardware. This business model seems to work out nicely. Sony on the other hand makes way too much crap. I'm sure Kaz Hirai would love nothing more than to eliminate Sony's waste at will, but he can't. Steve Jobs would have been able to do this. After he returned to Apple, one of the first things he did aside from asking the entire company board to resign was to axe 70% of Apple's product line. Like Sony, the Apple of the mid 90's was making too much with too little focus.

Sony as a whole and Microsoft as a whole both had a revenue of over $18 billion for the quarter ended 30th september 2013 making them about the same size with Sony having nearly 50% more employees.

Microsoft just makes a lot more money the biggest advantage in being a software over a hardware company.

Is anyone here really shocked by this. Sony has been bleeding cash for years, and then they go sell 4 million PS4's which don't even bring in profit and people act like they should be the kings of the world again. The PS3 was a huge failure for Sony, even after selling 80 million consoles. They only sold 95 million 1st party games and a ton of those were packs ins. The Vita has sold 7 million but the software sales are pathetic. They have sold about 4.3 million 1st party games total, while Pokemon X/Y has moved 9.3 million on its own, in 3 months. They have been destroyed in the TV market, not doing very well in the home appliance market, and have zero presence in the tablet/smart device market. For as bad as the Wii U is doing Nintendo has moved 8 million copies of unbundled 1st party software on it, not to mention that Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Smash Bros will sell millions no doubt. The 3DS console and software alone is more profitable then Sony's entire company right now. Trust me I want Sony to do better because Microsoft left a really bad taste in my mouth last gen, but if Sony is around in its current form in 5 - 10 years I would be surprised.

What are you talking about?    Every division in their company is pulling them down and the gaming division isnt doing jack squat for them.  Yea they sold 4 million PS4's, at zero profit, and then 1.62 million 1st party titles between Knack and Killzone.   Sony would trade places with Nintendo in a heartbeat.  The 3DS's software sales alone bring in more profit then Sony's entire company.

seriously i don't get why some of you are so keen about talking what a company is worth? do you people make your decicions upon buying a product dependant of the market value of the developer? i certainly don't.

That's pretty impressive considering Nintendo is a strictly gaming company.
