Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are the PS+ "free games" the crack that will bring down the industry?

Each and every month, PS+ offers several games to its subscribers for no extra cost. Some of them are AAA titles, heavy games that (should) sell many pieces day-one.

Now let's put the pieces together: A patient gamer does not have to buy every title day-1. All he/she has to do, is wait several months and play it for free. For a meager 50 bucks you get a full library and a backlog that will keep you from buying new games every couple of months. Exception to the above, are personal favourites which we all need to get as soon as possible.

The question now stands. Out of those 50 bucks what profit does Sony make? Even more so, what does the game developper/publisher get out of it. If the situation described above becomes trend, should that not mean that devs will earn significantly less money? That they will reduce production values to meet decreased income? Sony will perhaps need to spend more to acquire those games for PS+, reducing the quality of the games offered or even reducing the quality of the services.

All things considered, if devs and publishers find console market unrewarding, should they not move to other gaming markets like tablets and smartphones? Devs that now bring us diamonds like Bioshock:Infinite and Brothers: A tale of two sons, will be instead making variation of Bejewelled?

Such a person who doesn't buy games because he knows which are coming free shouldn't have to worry about money, since he can clearly see the future

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Who's really gonna wait over 6 months to play a game and hope that game some day is free on PS+...I have no fear that Irrational games is gonna start making mobile games cause of PS+...

the not AAA title will have a problem. those are the games u will pick up for free and not buy it day 1 or early.

Why would the industry be damaged by a service that is just extra revenue? The film and TV industry isn't being destroyed by the success of Netflix or LoveFilm, YouTube isn't killing the music industry.

There is a fine line in how it's done, Sony aren't offering the newest titles for download, many of the games that are on PS+ have long since been out and sales dropped off, it's an extra source of revenue for the developers (in the assumption they are offered money for these downloaded titles). Lets take Borderlands 2 for example, just arrived on EU PS+ 2 months after the GOTY Edition. The 'free' game might entice people to buy DLC or buy said GOTY edition to get the DLC after playing the game.

And Sony make money from it else they wouldn't do it.

Hmm, pie.

The only thing PS+ is really hurting is the USED game market.

It all has to do with the assumption that patience in not buying day-1 becomes mainstream. Surely you cannot predict that a game will be "set free" on PS+, but you have nothing to lose if you wait several months. So, if people quit on buying day-1 (excluding personal favourites), then devs' and publishers' income will drop significantly.

Typically the games that are on PS+ are over a year old, maybe several years old, or didn't sell great. Most importantly, not every game makes its way to PS+. People with disposable incomes aren't going to play the waiting game, they're gonna go buy the games they want.

Services like Netflix and Spotify bring money to the movie and music industry people wouldn't have given otherwise. I feel a services like PS+ does the same.

Me. I wait for six and more months and am rewarded for it with keeping my money.
