Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sessler: Nintendo needs to change controller for Wii U to succeed

But there's a friggin' PRO CONTROLLER!

I also understand the other side of this. Nintendo could have shaved 180 bucks off the Wii U and just made a regular controller like EVERYBODY ELSE and made crazy profit. If Nintendo lives to sell another console in 2020, believe me... they won't make the same mistake. Let's just hope the new Zelda proves us wrong and gives us a real reason to experience the pad.

WTH? They already gave me plenty of reason to own one and enjoy it.

It is a regular controller in every way.

Please tell me what a "Normal" controller can do that it cannot?

If its not a normal controller then how can the PS4 have a normal controller? Or are we going to start some childish BS now that its the size of the screen that determines if its normal or not?

I still maintain that the Gamepad was conceived as a tool to assist Miiverse...for Miiverse to function as it is, it needs the gamepad for ease of typing and especially for creating artwork which is a very heavy feature. None of these would be possible on a traditional controller layout. Nintendoland, Zombi U,W101 , Rayman and Game and Wario have great ideas to show off what the gamepad can add gameplay wise, and off tv to me is the single most useful concept in the history of gaming. I havent had to fight my wife for the TV for a year now..peaceful days.

Let's just hope it won't take them until Q4 2017 to release said Zelda, 5 years is simply FAR too long to spend on development *cough*Skyward Sword*cough*

Hey bro, I'm a Nintendo fan at heart but you have to face facts. I love the GamePad but the people don't. I just want the Next Nintendo to be up in the ranks as a true Next Gen console. I know that you don't need to be powerful to be next gen but by golly it sure does help.

Anything that is in the vein of Skyrim is well worth the wait. The Wii U zelda director noted Skyrim in a Development talk. Skyward sword wasnt' worth the development time, I'll give you that.

The gamepad lacks analogue triggers so in that way is inferior to other controllers.

I've been saying for a long time that Nintendo need to change the gamepad but only by shrinking the screen size to perhaps 2/3rds of its current size so the gamepad can be more comfortable, stylish and with longer battery life.

I'm also tempted to believe they should re-introduce analogue triggers to the new design. which frankly should never have been omitted. This obviously creates the problem that the early gamepad doesn't have analogue triggers but this can be worked around with multiple controller configurations for each game. Those that have the original wii u still benefit from the larger screen but I think most especially small children will prefer the smaller version.

If they can make a gamepad with the sculptured shape of a normal controller but still offer a reasonable screen in the middle that will be the ideal design for it.

I disagree with the "go for the hardcore not the casual gamers" depending on what he means by it. Consoles before the Wii sort of did that and they did not do well. I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. They should just make a cheap system, that's sold at a profit, geared towards kids and families while also trying to satisfy veteran Nintendo fans.

Yeah it all started with the WIi, if you actually close your eyes and pretend PS and PS3 never existed.

Or is Barbie adventures and Rugrats now considered hardcore AAA titles?

I guess I should edit the post. You're the second one that misunderstood me. I meant Nintendo consoles before the Wii and especially after Sony came in were not successful. I'm basically saying that Nintendo shouldn't go after the same market that Sony and Microsoft are going for. Because frankly they don't do that well if they do.

Trivial point. Changing analog positioning won't make a difference.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The controller is fine. They just need 3 things:

1. I heard they made a bigger gamepad battery for Japan only. Localise it.
2. Make the pro controller useable without the original gamepad.
3. Sell the gamepad in stores like regular controllers (why the fck aren't they doing this?)

1. It's available in Europe and the US already.
2. AFAIK the pro controller can be used to turn on the WiiU and load a game, then play pro controller-compatible games.
3. There are no games out yet that can use 2 gamepads. Initially, it would have been a waste of resources to have standalone gamepads in stores, when they needed to maximise the number of complete consoles available. Now, it would just add to the confusion that still surrounds the Wii U, and would likely lead to many unhappy uninformed customers who shelled out $150 on an extra gamepad they can't/won't use. If your gamepad breaks, call Nintendo for a replacement.

Well, however the next Zelda turns out, Nintendo cannot afford to have it spend THAT much time in development, especially considering that in that case, it would be near the end of WiiU's life and thus automatically not sell as much as it could have if released earlier. They need it asap.
