Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sessler: Nintendo needs to change controller for Wii U to succeed

Most of the games I have don't even require me to use the screen on the controller, so it's essentially a conventional controller. But off-TV play... I never imagined how much I would come to love it. It solved a problem I didn't know I even had, but now I don't want to imagine my Wii U without it.

The game-pad adds a really unique element to game play that I really enjoy. Games like Rayman, Nintendoland, Zombiu, and Resident Evil: Revalations were great experiences for me due to the game-pad. However it's disappointing that NSMBU and M3DW did not utilize it in the same way. If this is the path Nintendo is going to continue to go down for their future games then it would have been better invested in more powerful hardware.

I loved when he sang "Losing My Religion" with his band, REM, back in the 90's.

Thankfully, the controller isn't misogynist.

Aren't the Xbox and Playstation's sticks in opposite positions compared to each other, too? Like, symmetrical sticks for PS, and assymmetrical on Xbox...? That would make it exactly the same as what he's talking about in regards to Wii U's setup, then; muscle-memory being thrown-off 'cos the controller's layout is different. That's just biased silliness.

He's right about Nintendo not supporting the GamePad with the proper game(s) though, like they did with Super Mario 64 and Wii Sports for the N64 control stick and Wiimote, respectively.

I belive he is just talking about the right side of the controller, as in the stick is above the buttons which is the opposite of almost all modern controllers starting with the PS1, N64 gen.

On topic I somewhat agree with him. I find the controllers rather cumbersome and awkward. I would much rather play the games with the pro controller, forget the touch screen. I just dont know how much changing the controller would affect a more casual gamers opinion on buying the system or not. No one seems to know the console even exists.

What's wrong with the Wii U Pro controller? Use that if you don't like the gamepad

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

The pro controller has the same layout. The analogs are above the buttons on the pro controller as well.

Cumbersome, awkward and little interest in the touch screen, all criticisms you left out.... I know the pro controllers has the same layout I just find it more comfortable to use.

But there's a friggin' PRO CONTROLLER!

I also understand the other side of this. Nintendo could have shaved 180 bucks off the Wii U and just made a regular controller like EVERYBODY ELSE and made crazy profit. If Nintendo lives to sell another console in 2020, believe me... they won't make the same mistake. Let's just hope the new Zelda proves us wrong and gives us a real reason to experience the pad.

I disagree with the "go for the hardcore not the casual gamers" depending on what he means by it. Consoles before the Wii sort of did that and they did not do well. I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. They should just make a cheap system, that's sold at a profit, geared towards kids and families while also trying to satisfy veteran Nintendo fans.

Yeah it all started with the WIi, if you actually close your eyes and pretend PS and PS3 never existed.

Or is Barbie adventures and Rugrats now considered hardcore AAA titles?
