Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sessler: Nintendo needs to change controller for Wii U to succeed

I disagree with the "go for the hardcore not the casual gamers" depending on what he means by it. Consoles before the Wii sort of did that and they did not do well. I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. They should just make a cheap system, that's sold at a profit, geared towards kids and families while also trying to satisfy veteran Nintendo fans.

LOL did not do well? like the PS1 and 2 both selling better than Wii?

Sorry for the confusion. Meant Nintendo consoles before that. I just don't think Nintendo can compete with Sony and Microsoft for the "hardcore" market.

Around the Network

Trying to compete with PS4 and One for the hardcore guarantees third place by far.

Nintendo must try something else. And it has to be with the tools they have, poor as they are.

Aren't the Xbox and Playstation's sticks in opposite positions compared to each other, too? Like, symmetrical sticks for PS, and assymmetrical on Xbox...? That would make it exactly the same as what he's talking about in regards to Wii U's setup, then; muscle-memory being thrown-off 'cos the controller's layout is different. That's just biased silliness.

He's right about Nintendo not supporting the GamePad with the proper game(s) though, like they did with Super Mario 64 and Wii Sports for the N64 control stick and Wiimote, respectively.

Based on my experience, I've heard people said Nintendoland and Zombiu made good use of the GamePad. Unfortunately, they don't seem like system selling titles.

ok that makes more sense, but I would argue that before Wii NES did good as did SNES. But NES had no real competition and SNES had some with Sega and sales dropped...hmmmm.  It seems that if anyone gives Ninty competition in the home console market they start to falter now why that is i dont know.

Oh boy...he said something bad about the gamepad/touchscreen controller. Seriously he is right, there is no software using it's full capabilities, whichever they may be, not even Nintendo is making use of it. If you are not going to use it get rid of it and cut down the cost of the wii U simple as that.

The gamepad is a traditional controller layout, hello!!

Thankfully, the controller isn't misogynist.

*does a google search*

What?!

I'm not gonna bother watching the video since hearing Adam Sessler's voice makes me want to throw up, but I do agree that Nintendo has failed to properly show off the WiiU gamepad. One game of Wii Sports was enough to sell millions of people on the idea of using a Wiimote. I want that level of creativity back. The Wiimote was out of the box thinking that payed off in a big way.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Good point. But Zombi U wasn't made by Nintendo, so they had nothing to do with that.

As for Nintendoland, I think that that one just isn't the type of game that instantly makes it clear what the console/controller is all about, like say, Wii Sports was. Or Mario 64. Those games were revolutionary in their own ways. Nintendoland just doesn't create that same instant understanding, even if you see it being played.

Furthermore, Nintendo haven't really done much as far as creating game experiences that put the GamePad's unique abilities to relevant use after Nintendoland. It's mostly just used for maps, off-tv play, small touch-based commands, gyro camera controls and whatnot. Although it does make for a very smooth, quick and streamlined experience in some cases, it's nothing shockingly relevant nor extraordinary.
