Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sessler: Nintendo needs to change controller for Wii U to succeed

"The games that are being made for the Wii U seem to be coming from the mindset of a traditional controller and even the pro controller follows in the way that the buttons are bellow the sticks and you know what, after how many years for most people for creating that muscle memory of where buttons are in relation to the analog sticks...The idea of having the gamepad and the idea of what it was supposed to do has not been fleshed out yet...Nintendo made the controller and did not have the game in mind for it."

I know what he means - that tendency for people to get confused when buttons don't follow the pattern they're used to. Like this:

It's a death knell for a console. Clearly.

Not going to watch it. But the point he puts forward is made clear in the original post? So Nintendo has to release a controller with the right stick below the buttons to make the Wii U succeed.

His main points were the analog sticks placement, the lack of software that is specifically made for the Wii U gamepad he said all software is made with a traditional controller in mind, Nintendo made the controller with no game in mind for it, and just make the games without going after the casual audience "just go after the core audience."  Its funny he doesn't mention price once.

Yep. How about that one, Nintendo?

I disagree with the "go for the hardcore not the casual gamers" depending on what he means by it. Nintendo consoles before the Wii sort of did that and they did not do well. I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. They should just make a cheap system, that's sold at a profit, geared towards kids and families while also trying to satisfy veteran Nintendo fans.

Aren't the Xbox and Playstation's sticks in opposite positions compared to each other, too? Like, symmetrical sticks for PS, and assymmetrical on Xbox...? That would make it exactly the same as what he's talking about in regards to Wii U's setup, then; muscle-memory being thrown-off 'cos the controller's layout is different. That's just biased silliness.

He's right about Nintendo not supporting the GamePad with the proper game(s) though, like they did with Super Mario 64 and Wii Sports for the N64 control stick and Wiimote, respectively.

LOL did not do well? like the PS1 and 2 both selling better than Wii?

I agree that most companies are making games mostly for the traditional controller and that Nintendo didn't really have a game in mind for it but I don't think that's why it's doing poorly.I honestly think it's the case of too little too late in regards to just about everything, like the specs, online, 3rd party support. I think gamers have ran out of patience with Nintendo. Despite what I said I don't think the Wii U is doomed, I think it'll do fairly well once the heavy hitters come like Smash bros, Mario Kart, X, etc. When the 1st party games start rolling out gamers will forget about the shortcomings.

who needs buttons when you have touchscreen

For the most part, yeah, it seems to have been an expensive gimmick. The Wii controllers changed game-play on the system, which meant that the games themselves changed. The Wii U game-pad isn't really doing that in most cases.

Should be an interesting thread. I expect to see a lot of posts that take the low road and bash him without really addressing much of anything.
