Seriously? You're more than welcome to your own opinion of the game dude. But "3DFlop"?

The game sold over a million copies in a month. One month. That is not a flop, don't misuse a term like that.

IMO, it's one of the best 3D Mario games they've yet made. It's not as epic as they obviously COULD make a 3D Mario, but it's sure as hell fun, and a hell of a lot better than Sunshine or Galaxy 2.

3D World is NOT a flop. It's ben tracked for less than a month, and it's already crossed a million, sold to more than 20% of the Wii U userbase, (and that's just tracking physical sales) and most likely recouped all dev costs.

Anyone who expects tech demo graphics and voice overs are idiots. Aonuma said it wasn't going to be like that, and Zelda games never had true voice acting.  You're out of your mind for not expecting cutscenes though.

I don't want voiceovers, it would ruin the atmosphere and storybook nature of the series.

Nintendo are morons for not using the tech demo graphics though. It's yet another chance to attract new gamers they're letting slip through their fingers.

I think people are making the mistake of thinking this is apart of Nintendo's 3D Mario series. Which it really isn't. Nintendo seems to have split the Mario franchise into 3 platform series, where I believe they will release one version of each every console generation.

3D Mario "Triple A" Series (64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 + 2), 2D Mario "Cash Cow" series (NSMB 1 + 2 + Wii + U) and then the bridging 2.5D series (3D Land, 3D World).

As for 3D World being a flop, it seems to have strong legs and has maintained momentum. It had a weak release as it launched along side new gen consoles, but according to these charts it seems to have broken a million. So calling it 3Dflop is pretty childish and premature.

As for my opinion of it? It was a really fun solid title with plenty of content to keep you entertained for a good while, it was challenging while simple enough to pick up and play. My partner and I are looking to return to it now that I had finished it alone, and complete the levels together. To put this in perspective, my partner has never really liked Mario titles before, and since this has grabbed their attention as a fun game, I think it's doing its job.

That strikes me as a misuse of the term "2.5D".

I'm also inclined to believe that the Galaxy games are sufficiently different enough from 64 and Sunshine to be considered its own sub-series. However, I think I'd rather let Nintendo determine what should be considered a 3D Mario game.

With 3D World Nintendo finally made MY dream Mario game. I was never a huge fan of the 3D Mario games that came before, so i will rank it as follows:

Super Mario 3D World>Super Mario 64>Super Mario Galaxy 2>Super Mario Galaxy>Super Mario Sunshine.

Galaxy 2 is more in line with 3DWorld than with Galaxy 1. It has the philosophy of just one or two stars per level, more streamlined, focused on 2D platforming in 3D space, the overworld, access to the stages, music, etc. The levels I remember can fit in 3DWorld.

I have to ask. Super Mario 64 is my favorite 3D Mario game. The overworld is my favorite in the series and each level felt open and not linear. My biggest problem with Galaxy is how linear it felt. Does 3D world give you exploration or is it more linear? I'm on the fence of getting a Wii U now or waiting until Smash Bros. and Mario Kart come out next year.

First Galaxy is linear, but let you explore a little. Galaxy 2 is linear. 3D World is like Galaxy 2 or even more linear. Just imagine playing SMB3 but now in 3D.

3D Land is a product of Iwata's Nintendo, which is a Nintendo that likes to port successful handheld games to their consoles to save on cost and time. Everything about modern Nintendo is about saving on costs and time. Before design, concept, gameplay and anything else, comes cost. Everything MUST be done as cheaply as possible before it's even considered. That's why the Wii was a Gamecube with a new controller and the Wii-U is a 360 with a new controller. It's why the 3DS and Wii-U doesn't have capacitive screens. It's why 3D Land exists instead of a modern Mario64 ( a game that DWARFS 3D Land in ambition). It's why none of their games have extremely deep online gameplay. It's why it took so many years for them to finally start using real music instead of midi. It's why they STILL refuse to start using full voice acting and cutscenes.

People want to believe them when they say they have a reason for excluding this or that, but it comes down to Iwata and his business sense. He is all about investors and profit margins. He will not green light big projects if there is even a moderate risk of not creating a huge bottom line. Sometimes it's paid off, other times, it hasn't. I think going forward, he's going to have to get with the times and spend some of that capital. Nintendo's console games are starting to become love letters to an era that doesn't exist anymore.

This... sounds so true, sadly. So true it hurts really badly. I wish Nintendo would bust out some cash and really go all-out on games a little more often, and do everything they can. I think in terms of raw potential they have some of the greatest there is, not that there aren't other great game developers out there but yeah... As for hardware, I think everyone knows not to expect super hardware with crazy specs from Nintendo, so as long as they keep up in general I think they're fine here--the 3DS graphics aren't overly impressive but the 3DS is still selling like crazy.

That being said I think you were a bit too tough/extreme with your opinion but in general you have a point, and it only hurts because I'm a Nintendo fanboy haha. The main thing that I think would benefit them right now is some deep online gameplay--if they can get a better infrastrature for Mario Kart and Smash up, like a TRULY good one, that would be great. Miiverse is a great social aspect to it and they usually include great local multiplayer, but I think getting people addicted to games with online gameplay is something they like, don't do, whereas other systems have plenty of games where people are spending hundreds upon hundreds of hours online.

And hey, all their online is free right now, which is a huge bonus, but if they need to start charging to maintain better servers or whatever, I doubt a ton of people are going to complain given the status of Xbox One and PS4 online...

Calling 3D World a flop is going to prove you wrong come the end of this generation. 3D World is just the sort of Mario game that will have a long tail, and it will have LTD sales to rival the Galaxy games. Mark my words.

I have a huge problem with this like of thinking: it's nearly impossible to make a game as ambitious and pioneering as SM64 was.
