Blu-ray set a new sales record in black friday week. It's still behind dvd but catching up.

For the week ending 12/14/13, consumers generated $127.10 million in Blu-ray disc revenue, up 15.7% from the same week last year. The previous record for Blu-ray disc revenue set during Black Friday was $119.15 million. During the same week, DVD revenue was $203.04 million, down 15.2% from the same period last year.

Total spending for the week ending 12/14/13 was down 5.48% from the same week the previous year.

Now with both HD consoles putting blu-ray players in homes will blu-ray grow faster?
Or will the focus of all consoles on streaming media only hasten the demise of the physical disc market.

nope.. streaming is the future.. who wants to go out to get a disc when with a press of a button a movie shows up on your TV

Blu Ray on Nintendo and Microsoft following Sony will expand Blu Ray adoption, but yes Sony has already done most of the work that needed to be done the same way they did with DVD's during the PS2 era. Blu Ray has been big a relatively short amount of time. It wasnt until like half way through the PS3 era that it started to pick up speed on stand-alone players. DVD's first came out in 1995 and no one could afford it until the Playstation 2 in 2001, so the Blu Ray market will slowly eat away at the DVD market.

It seems they're predicting people are going to spend a lot more money total on movies. Physical not shrinking much while online takes off.

It's not shrinking that fast, I guess the higher price of blu-ray helps. Total units sold is probably going down faster.

There will be a point were both sides level off. Digital comics just did that recently. They reported a low gain in digital. There are people out there that want physical no matter what. Why do you think CD's are still around? To be honest. If companies did two changes to physical media. It would start gaining traction again. Switch to solid media. That would remove load times. And completly remove scratching issues. And second: No more ad spamming, or remote control lock out at the start of a disc. That artificially slows down the disc. Imagine that was kept in your digital copy.

The only people the Xbox One is going to switch over to Bluray are diehard MS fans who wouldn't get Bluray because it was mostly associated with Sony in the gaming world. Of course, I expect that number to be incredibly low. I also don't see Xbox One pushing the kind of number that would greatly influence the Bluray market. PS4 may, but then I would imagine most of those people will already have stand alone players.

The real reason Bluray sales haven't skyrocketed, like DVD did, is because Bluray is BC with DVD. So, a lot of people are upgrading their player, but keeping their DVDs. Bluray is going to be more of a slow burn that will spread larger and larger with time.

I personally still get some things on blu-ray, but I'm generally patient enough to wait to see them on Sky Movies or Netflix

I did just get the complete Spartacus Collection on Blu-ray, but since I received that, I've watched about 10 episodes of tv on netflix, mostly because I don't really want to change the disc

Ha, my wife does that too. Record stuff of tv we have on blu-ray. Drives me crazy. I watch movies I don't expect to be watching a second time on tv or streamed as well, but when I happen on a really promissing movie I stop watching and order the blu-ray to watch with the best possible picture and sound quality on a projector. Plus I also like watching the extras or listening to the commentary tracks.

I realize I'm in the minority though, blu-ray simply isn't user friendly with its load times, manadatory screens, slow menus and copious amounts of commercials. If they don't sort that out 4K blu-ray won't have a chance. Even with instant play discs, universal resume play, or even full disc installs, I'm afraid 4k blu-ray will be a niche product. My hobby is going to become more expensive again, like it was with Laserdisc. The golden era of physical movie ownership is about to end.

No, but cheap ass Blu-ray players that are on the market now are doing it already. Can get one for 50 bucks. I just use my PS3 if I want, but I only have 1 Blu-ray movie, and it's a Snowboarding documentary that I also have a 1080p version of on my server lol.....
