Forums - Sony Discussion - PSN is down, on Christmas Eve

I'm just getting home and about to go to sleep. PSN and XBL have been having some pretty amazing deals all month. I think today on XBL, there's a bunch sports games on sale. What's PSN offering today (and can I try to buy tomorrow if I can't buy today?).

PSN US:

Holy shit, that Hotline Miami deal!

Here is the non-Plus stuff:

They had Hotline Miami for free for PS Plus members but I didn't bother to download it.  Is it a good game?!?

Welcome to PSN. Ugh. I love Sony's IP but their online service is NOT XBL. I bought a PS4 with the expectation that it's service would be up to XBL's but, it's not. In the 10 years I've had XBL, I can't remember one single time it was down for "maintenance". Not at 1pm, 1am...3am...never. It's always just...worked.

Back when PSN was free, it was acceptable, but if we have to pay for it, that's now out the window.

Yeah no..

Yeah no what? No that I'm lying? Or no that it's gone down? Because that's two separate things. In 10 years, MY XBL has never been down, ever. Since November 15, my PS4 has had the store go down multiple times, PSN go down for maintenance, codes redemption shut off, the what's new app shut off etc. It's just unacceptable.

No as in Xbox Live has had problems like this before as well. It may have never happened to "YOUR" XBL account but it doesn't mean it hasn't happend. Much like my PSN and game was still signed in when I came home last night. Your using your personal experience to implicate that XBL is better then PSN when it's just your opinion. We all have had issues here at one point or another with a system, well maybe not you since your world is perfect with gummie bears and rainbows. People have had trouble with both PSN and XBL sporadically since the launch. That's what this is, a launch. You bought a PS4 at launch time and it's unacceptable that the service had issues?  Maybe you didn't realize your pretty much a beta tester if you a buy a console at launch..

Regardless, the service is actually back now anyways, so sorry you had to spend your Christmas eve with PSN down for a few hours..

When I got a 360 AT LAUNCH, I did not have to put up with what I had to out up with with PS4. MS didn't have to shut down code redemption in order to keep XBL up. They didn't have to shut down anything. I am NOT biased, so I call it as I see it and since launch, Sony has wet the bed.

Crismass Eve is probably the least populated time of the year on PSN.

Dunno.  A lot of people have a "1 Christmas Eve Present" rule.

Nobody has to go to work the next day...

and a lot of Dad's have to stay up to sneak some presents under the christmas tree.... and what better way to wait then by playing some Madden or COD?

On another note... times are sad when people are acusing Prof of making something negative about Sony.

The PSN store was down lastnight, but you could still go and play stuff online.

Right now as I type this, the PSN store is up and running. Whats the big fuss?

But...to be fair, PS4 is seeing a WAY higher demand than 360 did at launch...

The opening week was like 3:1 and WW it was a massacre. Not to mention that back when 360 launched, not nearly as many used the online as they do today so the ratio of people trying to go online on PS4 was probably at least 5 times greater than at 360's launch.

Xbone had similar numbers and hasn't had to do the things Sony has done just to keep XBL up and running. It may sound like I'm trolling, or just an Xbot, but I OWN a PS4. I feel I'm entitled to be a little discouraged and have my opinion. It's been nothing short of frustrating trying to migrate to PSN. It just isn't nearly as refined. I had a PS3 for awhile, and it feels like the quality is exactly same which is bull because the service is no longer free. I think having to pay to play online is garbage, but if I have to, I expect to get something as reliable as XBL and logging onto my system at 2am, firing up a game, and seeing "PSN is down for maintenance" is NOT my idea of reliable.

I suspect the people who defend this are either

A.) People who have very limited experience with XBL and/or never used it

B.) Sony fanboys

or

C.) EXTREMELY easy going people who don't get upset about anything

Otherwise, it's just, not excusable imo. But that's just me.

I was adding a bit of perspective to your post, which mentioned only 360.

Either way, you can't expect massive improvements for PSN as soon as they begin charging for it. They first have to get the money, then improve it over time. BUT, even when comparing PS4 to One, PS4 had significantly more people trying to connect in the US on day 1 and now as christmas is upon us, PS4 is, again, significantly ahead of One in WW sales so there are more people trying to connect.

I'm not excusing the downtime, I am explaining.

That last part is uncalled for.

I still don't excuse it. Sony knew how many PS4's were preordered. They had a pretty good sense of the demand well before they launched and the fact that they didn't ensure enough servers to handle it is unacceptable for ME. Maybe it's just that I have high expectations. Like you said, they are transitioning. But again, I am migrating from Xbox and these hicups and downtimes are new to me. Maybe it's a case of being spoiled? Idk.

noticed it today on ps4 kept getting disconnected from online saying i needed ps+ to play lol

bottom line psn crashing on Xmas time tells me all I need to know, wasn't up to snuff last gen and still isn't now, even though were paying for the service, all the free games in the world won't change that

My friend was having trouble connecting today.

In related news, Steam has been down for hours now...on Christmas Day...during their giant holiday sale.

Yeah been trying to buy a few steam games, but steam is running like crap. PSN seems to be up but not everything. Cannot watch movies.

Not worth getting upset about... just hope they sort it out.

But... the flipside are we suggesting that it's down because of a massive influx of new users? or just down because of some failure.
