Forums - Sony Discussion - Apple to buy Sony?

I think Apple would more likely prefer to buy Sony's movie/music divisions and perhaps the Playstation unit as well ... but the rest of Sony is pretty much worthless to Apple. I guess there is the patent stuff though.

I see a ton of people in this thread screaming Hell no....but can people provide a legit reason as to why it would be a bad thing? Serious question and not having a dig at anyone.

They only think in the sense of gaming (understandable). But sony is much more than that.
Apple would really benefit from all the patents of sony, music and movie bussines

Thats spot on what Im thinking.

Apple has plenty of money to buy out Sony several times over.

I have plenty of money to buy bread several times over. I still prefer cereals.

Ok?

Could they get rid of that stuff?  Sure.

While COMPLETELY tanking their reputation in Japan...

and while having paid for that stuff.

If they want patents, there are tons of other companoes that would be cheaper and honestly.

If anyone was going to buy sony to gut it down to it's profitable parts it'd be a "bain capital" type company or just some individual investors.

A good point, but if a company is incapable of righting the ship, what then?  I mean, if there are no alternatives but to make serious sacrifices here, then what?

As I said though, I certainly hope that Sony fixes it's situation, I would not want to see anyone come along and scoop it up.

If sony has to do it... that's different.  You take a negative hit (and they have been) but it's not nearly as sevre.

A company buying and gutting them though?

I hope so

Now if google were to buy Sony
Google and Sony have similar business ethics.
Google likes to sell hardware on cost while hoping for profits from software like sony does for playstation.
Sony's designs are unrivaled and with google software they would be HUGE.
Google can afford to make Sony's entertainment business exclusive to their products thus a HUGE benefit to google's ecosystem.
Playstation can really help google's mainstream social media business as well integrating google+ and google hangouts to PS4.

Sony is virtually untouchable when it comes to patent infringment as they are the ONLY Android manufacturer not to ever get sued. With Sony's patents google will destroy apple/microsoft in court. Sony's patent portifolio is one of the largest in the industry. If that rockstar consortium went for 4.5 billion and moto went for 12.5 billion I really do wonder how undervalued Sony is.

This is also possible!
I think google has even more cash than apple, or at least very close to it.

And yes sony is really undervalued atm.

I'm not so sure.

While the likely dominance of the PS4 hasn't been fully priced in... a LOT of Sony's stock gain recently has just been on the assumption that they will benefit from a successful Abenomics plan.

Meanwhile, abenomics seems to be having some issues in that the companies that have made tons of money off of it... are just hanging on to their cash reserves.

Sony meanwhile... is still in debt... and it's structural reforms seem to be slow going.   The most noteable being the cancelation of the OLED TV product line and the selling of Gracenote... for like 100 Million or so less then they paid for it.  (Which was like $200 million) so they haven't exactly cut that much fat.

Sony isn't quite a Zombie firm, it does have a lot of debt... and one of the things Abenomics plans to do is to let zombie firms fail by allowing lending rates to increase.

If this hits before Sony hits year round profitability that could greatly increase costs.

Sony is very much a gamble right now.

But don't forget that Sony as a whole is valued much less than its parts
A Sony with only Movies, music, imaging, playstation, financials, and now mobile (all profitable divisions at $1.5-2 billion a year) would have a market value of a good 50 billion. And remember sony has assets valued at over a $150 Billion.

I don't really understand why Apple would want to....Also, if they did, the DRM shitstorm would be ridiculous.  I also bet Apple would want to release tons of different console specific SKU's also...Like pastel colors, slightly different form factors, ones with built in cameras, etc. etc....

All you have to do is answer the question: What does Sony have that Apple needs?

The answer is: Nothing.

I agree... on hardware, but what about content.

Apple has little interest in content beyond making sure their devices have good access to it, and they've secured that across pretty much all media now. Buying Sony and becoming a content publisher would jeopardize relationships with other content publishers and restrict Apple's ability to innovate in content distribution. It might actually be more of a liability than an asset.

Content also tends to be a messy, risky, hit-driven business, and Apple likes it's products to be a little more reliable and shift that risk onto partners.

Finally, content is the best part of Sony, so it's not likely to be for sale at a substantial discount like other parts of Sony. Less opportunity for a lucrative turnaround.
