The fact this is even a discussion is pathetic. Gamecube was a collosal failure. It couldn't even sell at $99. Where history on the Gamecube is being revised is beyond me. The console was a huge joke two gens ago. And here's the funny thing, Gamecube got all the third party games, (minus THE game of the gen GTA) was stronger than PS2 etc. All the things people say Nintendo should be doing now, they did it then to no success.

The Mario Kart game was garbage. The 3D Mario was garbage. The Zelda game was the most polarizing and caused massive blowback. The only game that really shined from Nintendo was Prime (And it sure did shine)

But now you're looking at Wii U, and what have you got? A quirky controller, quirky games, and sequels or Remakes to games no one bought before. You have a 3D Mario that is a kick to the mouth to 2D Mario fans, You have a 2D Mario that is a half assed effort (which is also a kick to the stomach to classic fans, because it coulda been so much more) You have a port of Wii Sports, and the Gamepad is used to see the golf ball?! Who cares?

That aside, Smash looks excellent, That DKC looks excellent. Mario Kart, looks excellent, though I'm not sure I'm into the whole F-Zero thing. Who knows what Zelda will look like, And honestly after Skyward Sword, I've lost all excitement for a Zelda title.

Will the Wii U outsell the failure that was Gamecube?, and this isn't even a joke. As it may or may not outsell it. Coming off the Wii which broke records to this dud is amazing, and utterly baffling.

I couldn't disagree more.  It was sold at a profit.  Did it have disappointing sales and was it beaten bad by the PS2?  Of course.  But anything that is profitable is not a "collosal failure" in my mind.  Oh, and that's just sales.  When it comes to the system itself, the history is not being revised.  People just realize now that it had some awesome games and it was a great system, like the Dreamcast.  Heck, it was the last Nintendo console to have competitive specs.  And it had some of the greatest games of all time.  Wink Waker was polarizing at the time, but now it's looked at as one of the top Zelda games and top games of the last decade.  Smash was loved by fans, Metoid Prime was amazing (both of them), Mario Sunshine was underrated, both Resident Evil 4 and the Remake were top notch, F-Zero GX was awesome, and it saw the birth of some key franchises like Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Pikmin.  It could have sold 10 units and these games wouldn't have been any less good.

First two bolds; We don't know how much GBA had to do with Nintendo's decent financials at that time. Secondly, Iwata himself claimed if Gamecube was the best they could do, they should get out of the console business. Second bolded; No matter how many forum dwellers want to claim this, no matter how badly Aonuma wishes this to be true. Its not. Wind Waker is still polarizing, it is still seen as a disappointment, the art style is still lame. The other games weren't underrated, they just weren't as good as their N64 counterparts. REmake and RE4 were awesome, but I was talking specifically about Nintendo first party games.

It was Nintendo's last console to have competitive specs, and it didn't do them any good did it? Software drives hardware, if the software was really that good, people would have bought the system to get to them. They didn't.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I personally think it was screwed from the start for a variety of factors, including the perception it was a "toy," the PS2 monster that sold 20 million copies by the time it came out and couldn't be stopped, no Grand Theft Auto, no DVD player, and I'll grant you a 3D Mario that was less than loved.  It reminded me of the Wii U in that even great games really didn't move systems or sell that great.  Look today at 3D World underperforming even though it's a great game by most accounts.  I think that speaks to a system no one is interested in instead of 3D World being a less than stellar game.

Now this is an interesting way of looking at things. Which I can respect, but I would argue, that if the game was as great as most accounts say, then maybe people would be interested in the system. After all that is the point of software right?

Unless there is something else keeping potential buyers away...

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

The Wii U and Gamecube comparisons are ridiculous. The 3rd party titles have been pretty even but the 1st party games are what has always moved Nintendos consoles.

Gamecubes 1st 13 months - Mario,Luigi,Metroid,Smash Bros,Starfox,Zelda,Pikmin,Animal Crossing,Monkey Ball,Mario Party,Star Wars,Wave Race.

Wii U's 1st 13 months - 2 Marios,Zelda Remake,Pikmin,Wii Party,Wonderful 101,Wii Sports Remake.

The Wii U only has a fraction of those titles, not to mention that the Wii U will get a real Donkey Kong, a true japanese RPG, and who knows what else Nintendo has in the pipeline. To be honest the fact that the Wii U will already be at 25 percent of the Gamecubes sales by the end of 2013 with those titles alone, pretty much makes it a lock that the system will not only pass but crush Gamecube sales. LT Wii U will sell at least 50 million just on the games coming out alone, not to mention that Nintendo will probably have a few tricks up its sleeve still.

Around the Network

By the way Gamecube consoles sales were bad but they still managed to sell 70 million 1st party games. PS3 may have moved 80 million consoles but has only moved 90 million 1st party games, which is one of, if not the worst 1st party game rate per console of all time. If it wasnt for GTA and COD the PS3 would have sold no more than 35 million consoles.

I almost completely agree with your post.  People don't seem to realize that the WiiU, even at $299, remains more expensive than any past Nintendo console.  Its price is still out of the "impulse buy" range and it has a whole host of software yet to release.  Bottom line - with strong software and price drops, WiiU has its strongest sales numbers still to come despite that it now has 8th gen competition.

Regarding the console selling 50m units, that's questionable at this point.  With everything we know about it so far I'd be skeptical, but on the possibility that Nintendo does indeed come through with software that proves the Gamepad's appeal to the masses, then 50m is more than doable.

Of course it will.

Mr Puggsly said:
Yeah, no problem. It has already achieved about a quarter of Gamecube's sales and Nintendo isn't making a new console for 5-6 years.

Gamecube was $99 after about 2 years on the market.

I'm thinking Wii U will do over 30 million. Maybe even better if they lose that tablet.

Never going to happen. Wii U was built around Gamepad features, why Nintendo would drop it?

I think it will be a close call, it will outsell the Cube by a few millions.

Nowadays internet has a bigger impact on game sales, for the better or for the worst than it was back in 2001.
If Nintendo develop games that mostly appeal to the hardcore, it will do Gamecube numbers. The GCN was made for the Nintendo hardcore fans, the games were great but they didn't reach the casual market, both in marketing and gameplay wise.
The Wii U seems like a mixed bag, it's obvious they are trying to bring back the hardcore fans with games like X , Hyrule Warriors, a darker Zelda game, Zombi U, W101, Pikmin 3, Luigi U, Smash 4, Bayo 2, etc... While trying to get the casual back with Wii fitU, Wii sports club, Super Mario 3d World, Mario Kart.

But it's way too early to tell what's going to happen since 3/4 of the announced games are not out yet, but it's going to be very interesting. I still think it going to at least reach 22M in its lifetime, if all the games above, minus Zelda U, are released in 2014 with Nintendo hyping it up with NDs.
