Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why I think the next Paper Mario won't be like Sticker Star ( hopefully)

I didn't mind the gameplay changes in SS (I'm actually pretty fond of adventure games in general), and the script was still funny even if it never came close to hitting the highs of previous games. Worst Paper Mario ever? Maybe, although I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting some of its ideas.

In my mind, though, the Wii U Paper Mario game will involve drawing. I'd also like to see rhythm game elements, since the battle system of Mario RPGs already rely headily on timed button presses.

I can't be the only one who loved Super Paper Mario the best out of the series......

It was truly brilliant. :)

The first two Paper Mario games were fantastic... then for whatever reason they changed it for the worst. Not to say that Super Paper Mario was a horrible game, but I found it to be a step backwards. I haven't played Sticker Star, nor do I have any interest in doing so...

Here's to hoping that they revert back to the original formula if they make a Wii U Paper Mario.

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC

I'll have to give up on the series if the next one is anything like Sticker Star. =/

I disagree. I understand how some people prefer the traditional rpg approach, but to me, SPM was a step "forwards", if we're going to bother using that kind of analogy. The first two games are very good. But if the third had just been more of the same, the series was in danger of repeating itself.

I found Super Paper Mario to be immensily enjoyable, it still had deep rpg-like mechanics, it had the great item crafting element going on (cooking), it had great mini-games in the "hidden" arcade, the use of the "flip" from 2D to 3D plain was very clever, and the Sprite powers were very inventive and useful. Not to mention how great it was to be able to play Bowser in a side-scrolling platformer type game for once, with fire breath and all. The game retained all of the same charm and clever writing from the previous games, the story was interesting (and funny), and overall, while "linear", there was plenty to do and plenty to keep you interested and coming back.

I'm not saying all Paper Mario games should be like that. But I certainly wouldn't call it anything close to being a "step backwards" for the series. And even if it's just it's own thing, I still say I'd love to see a second Paper Mario game in that style.

Imo, Super Paper Mario was fine in terms of visuals, story, and music. Infact I'd say it's the best Paper Mario in those areas, but where it falls short is the most important part, being gameplay. Combining RPG with Platformer really took it's toll here, as the game falls short in both areas in comparison to games that focus on one or the other. I mean, to fight enemies you just jump on them, and that's pretty much it. You can take out the majority of enemys in this game that way as there's hardly any variation in terms of what attacks you can do and what types of enemies there are. Needless to say it got repetitive real quick. The platforming parts I admittedly can't remember all too well, but that's probably because there were few platforming sections of note. Most of it is just rudimentary stuff, though there was this reverse gravity part that was kinda cool. Still, I finished the game wishing it stuck with the turn based battle systems and badges, as that woulda made it undoubtedly better than TTYD for sure.

I could get past the fact that is not a turn based Paper Mario mostly because the dialogue was  well-written and because there were tons of things to  do  like cooking foods to get recipes, the arcade was also tons of fun,  hunting treasures, finding optional Pixl, completing the two Pits of  100 Trails and so on.... It had TONS of content just like TTYD and I liked that.
