PS2 era will never be back. No console will dominate like PS2. At worst I see 2:1 PS4 over Xbox One but I highly, highly doubt that will happen. PS4 might hit about 100 million and Xbox One I see hitting around 60-70 million.
Unless people are buying the PS4 for the same reasons why a lot of people bought a PS2, it's silly to claim it will ever do PS2 levels. Let's not get over our heads. 
It's only its first holiday, and last gen lasted so long, people are just drooling over wanting a new system.
But it's nice to see PS4 selling well.

i think it means they shipped more, not that gaming has grown. because that is certainly the case with xbox one

You should clarify in your title it's not worldwide sales but US sales only :)

More likely that it's both, honestly. Gaming has most certainly grown in the past 13 years, by leaps and bounds, actually. Sure, it's not all Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo, there's tons of casual stuff, mobile phones, tablets etc... but gaming itself has grown dramatically since 2000. One just needs to look at some of the sales numbers/revenue these games are accruing to realize that.

Considering Sony was making close to 1 million consoles per month and they have been pretty much sold out since launch, this is not an unbeliveable amount of sales.
