After 4 weeks, I actually realised yesterday I no longer navigate menus on consoles with controller at all anymore. I no longer sign in with controller anymore. I no longer use controllers for uch anything other than playing a game.

How much quicker is it compared to navigating the same dashbord with an analogue stick and buttons ?

not really a fair comparision.   voice commands are a crutch for xbone's poorly designed UI.

Poorly designed UI, your joking right? I am a PC gamer yet i would say the XB1 has the best UI out of the 3.

U havent used it then, UI is about use not looks.

Yeah i have used it, i use it all the time, then again im used to windows 8 so for me the XB1 is simple and not far off from a PCs interface. PS4 and WiiUs are very basic. Im not talking about looks either.

Yeah i have windows 8, thats poorly designed too, i could tell that day 1 when i found the Shutdown option was hidden away in Settings now.

Luckily with Windows 8 you can quickly type what your looking for so i can cope with it. But as im sure youve seen W8 has come under alot of media and user criticism as being a poor design.

Yes, it isn't essential to play games and like Playstation Move wasn't taken seriously by developers

Windows 8 UI is an abomination too.

Well, I clicked on the thread to comment on whether or not kinect is a fad, but I see the topic has shifted to user interfaces instead... Which is kind of dumb because they both have pluses and minuses and superiority of one over the other entirely subjective.

I will try to get the thread back on track I guess by adressing the original question. I think kinect was in fact a fad... Because I dont think it works well for what microsoft intended. If they released a small controller that you grip while playing that would add an anlogue stick for movement and some buttons, I think kinect could have lead to some awesome gameplay improvements. However, microsoft dropped the ball and marketed the device to the wrong audience and then let it sit without real support. Now there are too many negative opinions of the device to have much future potential in attracting a new audience...

Isn't the Kinect 2.0 marketed as a UI, though. I know almost every commercial I've seen, it was.

Thats like saying the ps4 controller is a UI.  A input device is not a UI, but means of navigating a UI.

I'm not sold on it as a core gaming input device, I never bought one for the 360 because a killer app never came along. I don't feel the Kinect is there for games any more, but more to enhance the media functionality, that said with an 100% adoption rate perhaps a developer will finally make that breakthrough game.

Microsoft just doesnt have the skill to give kinect the right software. Kinect *could* work but better but not in the xbone incarnation

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

For games, yes. For real world applications, no. I see this sort of tech (which MS didn't invent) being put to use in our daily lives for just about everything.
