Forums - General Discussion - Why do Americans praise fat people that lose weight?

gaining weight is even harder if you have a fast metabolism like me and no fucking body will congrats you if you do unless you gained muscle mass in that case bitches will be all over yo dick

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Not sure why we should have to explain this, but we praise people for working hard to try and change their lives.

So, let's say you have a friend who is overweight to the point where it is severely detrimental to his health. You notice he's been trying really hard to eat right and exercise, and he's been losing weight. So, being a good friend, you congratulate him on his progress. You do this so that your friend will feel good about his effort and will be motivated to keep working at it to improve his health.

Now, on the other hand, you can say to your friend, "hey you've lost some weight... But you still shouldn't have eaten all those damn fries like the fat fucking piece of shit you were. You still need to lose like 60 pounds you fat fatty fat fat fuck". This would likely discourage the person and decrease the chance of them successfully losing weight. It would also just be a dick move in general.

So we praise people who lose weight to encourage and support them, and to be nice. Same way we would congratulate a person who is working hard to stay sober because we want to help them stay sober. We also do this out of empathy to show people that we understand that this may be hard for them, even if it may not be hard for us.
We don't tend to praise people who stay in shape in general because they don't need it. Telling a person who's never done heroin "hey good job not doing heroin!" really isn't going to impact them in anyway.

Pretty simple really.

100% correct This post should have been the end of the thread.

Because if you aren't struggling with your weight/health, then you don't have to overcome it. Being healthy may just come naturally. You don't really deserve praise for your own nature.

Whereas if you are struggling with your health and weight, you have to constantly be aware of what you are doing and eating, etc. Losing a significant amount of weight is not exactly easy, so when people do it they deserve praise.

For some people, eating healthy and exercising regularly is not all that difficult, so it does not really merit attention the way significant weight loss does.

The deal is that self-improvement is what is praised. If you have always been healthy, you haven't really improved so to speak, so you don't get praised.

I see the point you are making, that these people that have always been healthy ought to deserve praise/attention. I would say that they do, in a sense, because the unhealthy people strive to be more like the healthy people, like role models. That's praise enough in my book.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

You can tell a skinny person to eat a sandwich, but you get chastised if you tell a fat person to put the sandwich down.

Fuck double standards.

What the other posts said and also we aren't born the same at all. We're individuals genetically and we're only similar to people that share a good portion of our dna like our close family.

Also like other people said, there's a problem with double standards, why shouldn't a skinny person be praised for working out? It's as hard for him as it is for a fat person,in fact sometimes is much harder simply because no one cares and no will praise that person.

It's socially acceptable to be fat, so if you're a fat guy, no one bats an eye. It's not socially acceptable (at least, not completely) to be gay, so it is "brave" to come out. Because the mere notion that a person is gay makes that person a 2nd class citizen in the eyes of many.

Apples to oranges

fat people discuss me... but I believe its just about supporting others to live healthier and besides it takes dedication to lose a lot of weight. It shows focus and motivation.

I've been munching away at food my entire life and I'm still skinny.
