Hurt by Johnny Cash immediately comes to mind.

agreed!

There are two types of people in this world.  Those who think Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is better than Nine Inch Nails' and those who deserve to be round up and shot.

Ok, a little extreme but the NIN version is way better.

On topic.

Nirvana- Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie Cover)

Iron and Wine- Such Great Heights (Postal Service Cover)

Sonic Youth- Superstar (Carpenters Cover)

Nirvana- Lake of Fire (Meat Puppets Cover)

Great call - amazing version

HIM - Wicked Game (Originally by Chris Isaac)
Eskimo Callboy - Cinema (Originally by Benny Benassi and Gary Go... Skrillex also did a version)

There are many amazing musicians on the Rush tribute album who do excellent covers of their songs and this one is probably my favorite. The Rush original is still great but I prefer the cover - particularly the solos:

"The Analog Kid" by: Jack Russell - vocals, Mike Portnoy - drums, Michael Romeo - lead guitar, Brendt Allman - rhythm guitar, Billy Sheehan - Bass, Mike Pinnella - keyboard

Rush original:

"Hurt" by Johnny Cash > Nine Inch Nails version
"Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" by Marilyn Manson > The Eurythmics version
"How I Could Just Kill A Man" by Rage Against the Machine > Cypress Hill version

@bold:  I respectfully disagree.  :)

Seconded.

'80s synth pop > all

Off the top of my head

America by Yes (original by Simon and Garfunkel) prolly the best cover ever for me, took a pretty much boring song and made it into a prog epic
When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin (don't remember who did the original)
A few Beatles covers (Please Mr. Postman, Twist and Shout)
I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better by Tom Petty (original by the Byrds)
Knockin on Heaven's Door by Guns n' Roses (original by Bob Dylan)
Without You by Harry Nilsson (original by Badfinger)
Surfin' USA by The Beach Boys (I don't remember which was the original song but I'm sure it was Chuck Berry's)

And if we include plagiarism, The Flaming Lips took a meh song by Cat Stevens (Father and Son) and made it into one of my favorite songs of all time. Sure, they faced a lawsuit later, but it was very worth it

Lake of Fire - Nirvana's Version is Better than Meat Puppets imo... but it did feature the Meat Puppets
A lot of Elvis Songs Hound Dog for One was originally by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton
