Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares to You

Originally by Prince

Price wrote the song but the first artist to actually record it was The Familiy in 1985.  Prince recorded it twice once as a duet with Rosie Gaines.

And once by himself but both versions where recorded and released after Sinead O'Connor's version was released.

Hurt by Johnny Cash immediately comes to mind.

agreed!

There are two types of people in this world.  Those who think Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is better than Nine Inch Nails' and those who deserve to be round up and shot.

Ok, a little extreme but the NIN version is way better.

On topic.

Nirvana- Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie Cover)

Iron and Wine- Such Great Heights (Postal Service Cover)

Sonic Youth- Superstar (Carpenters Cover)

Nirvana- Lake of Fire (Meat Puppets Cover)

OK, this was going to be my post. Especially Lake of fire and man who sold the world (Even though Bowies version is great too).

Except that I do like Johnny Cashes version of Hurt just about as much as NINs. They have diffrent merits.

One is that of an angry young man looking into his frightfully short looking future and the mistakes of his relatively young past, the other carries all the heavyness of a long life full of regrets that is going to end soon. It's like two sides of the same coin and they're both beautiful.

Also Lana del rey -  The other woman.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Simlpy Red - If you don't know me by now (debatable)

Don't get me wrong, I like Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, just not nearly as much as NIN.  It's more the music than the vocals.  I love the sound of the flat guitar, and the piano makes a really great contrast.  The verses are really minamalistic as opposed to the lively chorus which sort of feels like a struggle.  It also helps that it's the finale of a concept album instead of a random song.

I like Johnny Cash's version, but NIN is way better.  Of course the best version is Kermit the Frog.

Well one thing is certain Kermit's version of hurt has the best music video.

Found another one.

The origial is pretty good also and was sung by the person that actually wrote the song Chris Braide who is one of the most talented writers when it comes to pop music.

Original was performed by Iggy Pop but Bowie co-wrote the song.

Original was written and sung by Stevie Wonder.  Posted the two songs as tributes to two great musicians we lost this year but really also like these covers better then the original versions.

Goldfinger-"99 Red Baloons"
Orgy-"Blue Monday" (I know I might catch some flack for that one, sue me)
Marilyn Manson-"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"

Somewhere over the rainbow.
