Damn, WiiU is doing OK in Japan now! Super Mario 3D World is having good legs too.

Japan 50% WW WiiU sales this week??

Nah, don't think it's that bad. I'm thinking 85-90k in NA and 55k or so in Europe. 200-220k total should be withing reach for that week.

2nd week of the month, 85k in NA would suggest 95k next week, 100k week after, and about 30k week after that, with the 70k VGC has for last week that's around 385k for NA for the entire month, that's about 345k for US. I don't see it being up that much from 220k in Nov.

Well, that's even worse if that's the case. Using the 360 in Japan as a metric to measure success is... strange.

Besides; the PS3 sold about 1.3 million in Japan in the first full calendar year even though it had competition, from the Wii no less, the Wii U is competing with 7-8 year old consoles and only recently started beating them. There's really no way to spin this into a great achievement.

Comparing the Wii U against past consoles is going to make it look bad.  What this thread is alluding to is the past performance of the Wii U itself.  Which is indeed much better.  And the rate of change seen for the holiday bump is quite a lot higher for Wii U than other consoles.   That must have a lot to do with having the right marketing and games right now.

Will it do well with upcoming consoles on the shelves too?  Hard to say but it's certainly doing much better than it was 8 weeks ago which is why there is celebration lately.

I believe it fair that a console can celebrate an acheivement against itself and not just against competition. Do we not celebrate when we succeed after previous failure?

Well said. Wii U is in a private battle. The battle of survival. Nothing else matters. PS4 to come or PS3 and wii of the past is irrelavant.

For me the wii u's first major objective is to get to 10m during 2014 and then outsell the GameCube overall (others may want different primary objectives). It may or may not happen.

To me significant improved sales in Japan is an achievement.  Let's see how it pans out WW.

The 360 did horrible during the second christmas and I believe the PS3 as well. The WiiU is not doing worst than the 360 during its first year.

Actually, the 360 sold about 6.7-6.8 (twice or more over what the Wii U will likely do) million in its first full calendar year and sold close to 3 million in its second holiday after both the record breaking Wii and the PS3 had released.

The PS3 sold almost 8 million first full year with a staggered launch and roughly 3.5 million in its second holiday season, or roughly 200-500k more than the Wii U's likely numbers for the whole CY 2013.

It's pretty damn bad, I think a lot of people don't realize just how bad. And nothing in your post it remotely close to being true.

Considering this is a thread about japan sales im pretty sure thats what hes talking about, ur using worldwide sales

I wasnt disagreeing with u, just pointing he was talking about Japan

And ur right that PS3 in 2007 sold higher than Wii U will in 2013 but Wii U is having a better holiday. Here are the first two weeks of December in any given year for PS3.

2007-40k & 60k

2008-30k each

2009-55k & 75k

2010-40k & 50k

2011-45k & 65k

2012-35k & 45k

2013-25k each

In comparison Wii U has done 50k and 75k in the first two weeks of december this year which beats PS3 in every year except 2009. Whether or not it continues that momentum going into next year remains to be seen but one thing is certain its lineup in the first half of 2014 is much better than it was this year. Wii Fit U retail, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 and maybe Hyrule Warriors should ensure it doesnt fall off a cliff again.

In this case, this might be true, but there are a whole lot of people who are seeing some decent Japanese numbers and thinking that this implies a makestic worldwide comeback.

That actually seems to be the case in perhaps 50% of these threads, with the other half basically being more; "that's all well and good but how about long-term?". It's a bit hard to determine which one this is. Besides, we don't know anything about what the competition can do here yet so we have no 8th gen measure right now.

For the record; I don't think anyone will sell a lot of home consoles in Japan this gen, they're fast becoming the world leader in the mobile market.

The Wii U is doing okay in Japan right now, no one can argue that, one can speculate on what it means and how it looks in the future though, this being a sales site and all. And I also think it's perfectly acceptable to compare it to other consoles, in the 7th gen these threads were bombarded with charts and graphs with aligned launches. It only very recently became unfair or irrelevant to compare the current Nintendo home console to others and that's not only a bit backwards; it's also kind of unfair with the 7th gen in mind.

Considering the 360 got out in Nov 2005 its second Christmas was in 2006 and it did very poorly in Japan throughout the year. I still remember them having a hard time selling 5k consoles in Japan in some months during the first year and giving away some 360 lol You guys must remember that.

It's good that it's selling more, but I also wonder about it's lows... as the wii-u looks like it is more erratic.. i.e 2-5k a week.. how low did the PS3 go within it's launch year?

That combined with the cost differences at the same timeframe, would probably make for interesting picture. I guess thats whats so fascinating about sales figures, there are so many variables... :D

Personally i don't get all the "well done Nintendo, its doing great".

It's competing against 6 year's older hardware. I know its starting from a bad base, so any increase looks good, but its only 74k, that still seems pretty low to me....

Has anyone got any Japan data for the second xmas for Wii, PS3 and Xbox360.. would love to see what those sales were... perhaps that will straighten out my apathy to those results :)

Wii>WiiU>PS3>PS2>XB360

bet with ash3336 he wins if Super Mario 3D World sells less than Mario Sunshine during the first three years, I win if 3D World outsells Sunshine's first 3 years. Loser get sig controlled for 3 months (punishment might change)

Do you doubt the WiiU? Do you believe that it won't match the GC?

Then come and accept this bet
