Forums - Gaming Discussion - X1 vs PS4 build quality

I've seen both consoles at a friends house... (oops, wait a minute, I already did that thread)

For people that have had the chance to check out both new machines, I'm curious about opinions over how well each console seems put together along with the quality of pack-ins for each system.

The X1 has caught a lot of heat for being priced $100 more than the PS4, with that higher price point being set squarely on the shoulders of Kinect. For those that see Microsoft's second version of their gaming camera as a useless, forced add-on, I suppose that justifies the frustration felt for a $500 console, or at the very least, opens up another approach for opposing fanboys to sneak up and bash the X1 upside the head. For those that were and are excited about what the Kinect 2 is suppose to be capable of, the extra hundred bucks is trivial.

But I don't think the steeper price can be attributed to the Kinect exclusively.

Both consoles include headsets. The PS4's is the inline type. It was comfortable in the sense that it wasn't wrapped around the top of my skull, but because of the design, people seemed to have a hard time hearing me and vice-versa. I just had to talk louder.
The X1's on the other hand is the more conventional type, with a slim headband, over the ear speaker, and mic-stick. The sound was perfect and it simply looks like something you'd buy third party. They could have taken out the Kinect, released the console at $424 and said the extra 25 bucks, in comparison to the PS4, was for the headset and I woulda been fine with that. It really is that much better.

Both come with HDMI cords and while I've never been one to buy into the hype over Monster cables, the X1's is definitely the heavier of the two.

Controllers: well, this really is a preference thing but, ergonomically Microsoft still has the upper hand in my opinion, by a long shot. While the X1's slightly redesigned controller isn't quite as comfortable as the 360's; it's a little smaller, the grips aren't quite as angled,..... as far as build quality goes, it's better than both the 360 and PS4's. Sony finally put some triggers on there but they feel more like caps than actual triggers and the joysticks don't feel nearly as sturdy.

The consoles themselves, I didn't really have the chance to throw them around the room, stand on them, or find a machine that would insert/eject the discs repeatedly until the unit finally felt abused and quit. Other than that, they're both somewhat heavy and solid and certainly feel worth the hundreds of dollars you just traded for them.
--On a side note, I'm pleased that Microsoft decided to ditch that cheap looking platic feed tray that grinded it's way out whenever you pressed the button on the 360. Seems a lesson learned after the PS3 released with the more refined auto slot.

All in all though, I think the X1 has the better accessories. So maybe that extra hundred bucks isn't all just a slim, rectangular eye that listens to your every move.

Idk power bricks always felt like the opposite of "Premium" to me...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

to be honest, I don't really get the power brick.. why they have one and PS4 doesn't. Maybe shell-shock from the millions they had to fork over in warranty costs last gen so this console's filled with lot's and lot's of space.
I don't know. but, it just kinda hides behind the t.v., outta sight outta mind.

Sorry going to disagree with you regarding controller. xbox one controller feels very cheap compared to the ps4's controller. The one's joysticks are ds3 loose, the dpad feels like it can pop off at anytime, and ive heard creaking in mine. The ds4 feels sturdy, has that oh so comfortable grip that makes it feel premium to hold and the dpad feels clicky but sturdy at the same time. I like the ones triggers better though.

Here we go again!

Xbox one controller to me feels better than the Xbox 360. It really only feels cheap cause its lighter than the original 360. Haven't tried the ds4 though. Looks way better than the ds3(never liked it). Haven't opened my ps4. Got it for a co-worker cause wanted one, but he doesn't have the money yet. I'll wait to open it till he pays or God of War comes (which ever comes first).

Killer instinct is sick!!!!

PS4 build quality is excellent so far.
I move it between the living room and game room almost daily without issues. I have a standard power and hdmi cable ready in each spot, slide it in the av rack and it's good to go. I just have to remember to always do a full power down otherwise it gets testy with me after I cut it's power off in standby mode.
Not that that gives any issues, at least I hope not. A simple power failure shouldn't break a console after all.
There must be some kind of capacitor in the internal power brick since it manages to beep and flash its blue light some times while I'm carrying it, holding it near the power button.
I kinda like the slow pulsing yellow light indicating it's charging the controller, easy to tell when it's fully charged again.

And both of them will still die before the N64

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I disagree on the controllers. I actually think that the X1 controller is a step back from 360 and not even in the same league as the DS4. Mainly because of the DS4's great new features that actually have practical gaming uses.

The X1 mic is clearly superior though. The PS4 mic is a joke to me and I honestly don't even know where mine is.

The systems both seem solid and well built, but so did the 360 when it first released. Time will tell if that holds true for both consoles kayer down the line. The PS4 with its lack of power brick seems more modern though.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

yeah. that thing was pretty much just one solid power brick.
